Cute toy but very limited

My, one insult after another.

Please don’t bait him anymore

And still the insults come.

If evangel or patrice have any pertinent points to make which do not involve insulting me I will be delighted to address them

they made points like you would be better off discussing your complaint about not getting an overdraft from Monzo with Monzo thru customer services rather than with users on this public forum.

My points in bold…
I’ve had a Monzo card for 12 months now, originally pre-pay, now bank account. It’s nice to see payments instantly but I mainly use it for budget/good overseas forex rate, I can’t see why anyone would use it as a main account without at least online access and statements technically, mobile is online access; but who said it’ll never come?.

I have an “interesting” credit history in that for most of my life I have been on a very high income but a few years ago (for reasons too boring to explain, but they were unavoidable nothing is unavoidable) had to default on some cards. The defaults are paid off bare in mind that defaults are on record for 6 years, I am in the top 0.5% by income of which, Monzo sees how much? Your credit history won’t list income, and have very substantial assets so why are you not aiming for a premier banking service?, but as an internet bank Monzo has no flexibility - computer says no does the computer say no, or has the option not appeared? and that is that as far as offering even a £100 overdraft goes. I’d like a bit more from a bank than just being an algorithm Algorithms are generally the cost-effective factor.

So it’s a nice toy but except for the forex, which is good, I have no plans to move from Handelsbanken where you actually talk to your branch manager in person and who understands your circumstances there is no requirement to move, I’d suggest keeping it just for the forex.

I’m in this same position. I too haven’t been offered something I don’t want or need. I’m interested that you find it insulting, though, as my reaction is more of a shoulder shrug.

Hey all, just a reminder to please stay on-topic and avoid personal criticisms of other users.

I’ll leave the thread open for now, but we’ll close it if it gets derailed again.

Thanks!

That’s exactly what I intend to do. There are two strands to this discussion, which seem to have become conflated.

The first is what I want from Monzo, and that is a cheap forex card, which suits me fine. But that loses money for Monzo.

The second is that a pure current account is guaranteed to lose Monzo money. So they need to make loans. But for a fintech the loan assessment process seems to need some tweaking.

RevK’s company? He’s a Monzo user :grinning: He wrote about us on his blog a few times!

If you’re looking for a cheap foreign exchange card then have a look at Starling. Pretty much the same as Monzo but they don’t have a limit on foreign ATM withdrawals at the moment.

Is there such a thing as a platinum Visa/Mastercard credit card in the UK? I haven’t seen them offered (likely due to low interchange), though I have seen the occasional World Mastercard (which is the step above platinum). Remember platinum is mid-range. World and World Elite Mastercard are above it, while Visa Signature and Visa Infinity are above it for Visa.

Now, American Express has a true platinum-as-high-end card but it isn’t the credit card (the platinum credit card is just a basic cash back card), it’s the charge card. I’ve also never thought of it as terribly hard to get, though? You just need to be willing to pay £450 a year for the right to carry a piece of plastic (likely to become metal soon, as the US version changed to metal last year - and Amex’s foreign card plastics are a few years behind the US).

It’s funny, when I first moved back here from the US I considered Andrews and Arnold, the price didn’t seem bad. Then I realised that while not bad (average) by US standards, it’s ridiculously overpriced by UK standards!

True, but Monzo’s limit is so high as to cover almost any holiday. I used way more cash in Israel than I needed to (I simply didn’t realise at first that just because you don’t see a terminal doesn’t mean they don’t take cards - they use the on-screen swipe reader), and I still came nowhere near the limit on a five day holiday.

But Platinum is just a name, if you really want executive - it’s $2500/year and an invitation

For a single maybe, but for a family of 3 or 4 not really. Sure, you could get two cards, but we usually go on 2 week holidays, primarily in cash only countries, and £400 really doesn’t get us very far.

Not to say that I’m particularly against Monzo’s current fee structure (I can easily work around it), but just saying that your “almost any holiday” may differ dramatically from others

What’s so special about platinum cards anyway? I really don’t get it…

But most of those cards don’t even look special, do they? How would anyone even know?

What I’m trying to say is, that it surely must be about status. But if you don’t notice by looking at the card that it’s platinum, then how does that convey status?

From Telegraph, 2001

Gold card customers will now pay a rate of 18.9 per cent
Platinum card holders will pay 15.9 per cent

You would know, and if you were a show off, so would your mates when you buy a round. They infer that you earn good money, and some people like to brag. Some cards have features like free airport lounge access, or for that black card - a proper concierge service.

You can even get low status poor credit cards in a gold, platinum or black colour, so it is all meaningless.
