going to china next year any issues using the card for paying in hotels etc ?

It’s easier to say the Monzo card cannot be used for payment in China.
Whilst there are exceptions particularly in places tourists are likely to be - generally no. You can use some ATMs, though, to withdraw cash. Merchant Bank and ICBC support MasterCard in most of their ATMs but not all.
