Britain's Monzo cutting up to 120 jobs due to coronavirus impact

It is awful, but they are in a consultation period, so no one yet knows which jobs will be lost.

(P.S. welcome to the community!)

so yes you are saying it’s not important. it is as important as regulation and how to run a bank.

are you seriously claiming otherwise?

What things by law, do you need to run a bank? A license, security etc. You do not need a diversity HR person by law to run a bank.

Yes, it is definitely not as important as preventing fraud

One is a law, the other an extremely valuable aspiration

Unless you are claiming there is prejudice, with no substantiation

You are mixing up the LAW and a specific job role.

Yes there is more work to do at :monzo:, but in generally terms, culture wise, they are in a reasonable place

Again, in what way?. They hired a head of diversity and inclusion, got a ton of press about it and then axed her when it came to cost cutting.

Is Monzo’s culture in a good spot?. I doubt with huge turnover in the senior executive team, staff firings, redundancies and furloughs that culture is in a good spot. Why would so many senior execs leave if culture was great?.

They already recognise and communicate the need, own the problem, and work towards it

How is axing your head of diversity and inclusion working towards improving the problem?. It does seem like Monzo recognises things that need to change, but don’t commit to it, and then axe it as soon as they have the good press and they need to cut costs

At a time when they are up against it they need to prioritise legal functions, not someone expensive and recently introduced to keep telling them that

That’s not what a head of diversity does.If Monzo is getting rid of its head of diversity, engineers, data scientists and operations staff, it’s clearly not in a good spot. A tech company certainly does not axe engineers when things are going well

precisely. it seems you’re saying with a straight face that as long as you meet minimum legal standards that’s all that matters.

i think a lot of people have very good reasons for telling you that’s a crock of s.

there are all sorts of minimally-legal things you can technically do. a lot of them are morally indefensible or even outright heinous.

She hasn’t been axed. Nobody has yet. She might be included in the redundancy, she might not.

Still not been axed.

Let me check… Nope, still not axed.

You’re not getting this are you?

She hasn’t even been made redundant yet (and might not be) and you’re already angry about it.

Maybe she thinks that if she can get a role else where that will save a colleague? No idea.

A couple of reminders:

  • This is a raw and emotional time for many working for Monzo who may well be reading this. Let’s be sensitive to that.
  • This thread isn’t the place for discussion of whether diversity is a core business function.

Did you ever have to deal with crises? Sometimes you have to take a decision between two bad options.

Just to be very clear, nobody has been axed or given notice of redundancy. I think it is important to mention that before tabloids scrape the forum for a headline.

YES they have. She has confirmed it herself, she’s in the consultation.

Which is not the same as being given notice of being made redundant.

According to a Monzo engineer she has been included in the redundancies.
