A little higher than what I expected. I already have a Barclaycard (which the card I’ve held the longest, although might now cancel) and a First Direct CC.
On a ratio basis I have limits of £0.33 with Barclaycard, £0.75 with First Direct and then £1 with Amex.
I was expecting something around what I have with First Direct, but they’ve offered me a third more on top.
So I called Amex and they said min limit on a card is £700 so I move 5300 worth of limit from the platinum cashback to the BA card taking that up to a limit of 10,200. This left my old card at £700 and it will get closed in April after they pay me out my cashback.
If you think that maths does not add up you are correct. I seem to have lost £100 through an admin error.
Also after I made my first purchase on the BA card I got 1000 points instantly. Does anyone know why this is?
I think a lot of cashback offers work like that, with the Barclaycard offers it often says not valid for gift card purchases, so they probably have some sort of flag against the transaction for whether it’s eligible.
So as I have mentioned before, my fee free year of gold card is near an end, so had an in app chat with Amex today and offered 10000MR points straight away when mentioned downgrading, so will stay with gold for another month or two. No obligation to stay the year with gold either from what was said.
I am now trying on their chat to see if they can do me something for going from Gold to Platinum, but I’ve just been palmed off to call the number on the back of my card
I went through chat threatening to close my BAPP - and they didn’t offer anything and were about to hit the button to close the account.
I called up again not too long later and they offered me 10k Avios on a 3k spend… and to be fair it’s worked because I’ve held onto the card even after the retention bonus because I’m very close to hitting the companion voucher now.
I am a bit hesitant to upgrade cos I don’t want to lose my points. I am not sure if they get carried over from gold to platinum and on top of that I know there’s a year charge and I am not sure if they take it up front or spread the cost.
that’s what I thought too, never knew about this page. will double-check with them about the points though! I’ve been saving points for about 4 years now to get an upgrade at one point in life and I don’t want to lose it all
Moving from Gold to Platinum, your MR points will stay, you’d only need to worry if you were moving from a MR card to an Avios card.
In terms of the fee, it’s charged on the first statement date after you apply/upgrade.
If you’re upgrading a Gold card, it’ll fall on whatever your statement date currently is for your Gold card. So your Platinum card will have the same statement date and when your next one is due, the fee will be added.
If it’s a fresh application you’ll essentially have a month until your next statement is generated. The fee is added then.
Thank you both, resolved my questions faster than the AMEX helpline Going to the USA with a few friends in a couple of weeks and wondering if it will be worth it to do the upgrade now, all the bookings were done my Gold. Even the care hire but not sure if they will honour the upgraded protection just in case something happens because I booked it on my Gold instead
A few things on this - after joining Platinum you’ll probably need to contact AMEX and Priority Pass to get your card added digitally ahead of your physical card arriving. I did it when I upgraded, it’s not too much work, just another bit of admin.
You’d still be covered for things purchased on your other AMEX cards.
Also, your car hire, you’ll want to process the status updates you get with the platinum card as soon as you can. You get things like car upgrades and free additional drivers from most larger hire companies.
I’d imagine it’s gone straight into the bin. I don’t think legally they’d be be able to open an account for you without you agreeing to their terms etc. but it’s weird it lets you submit it in the first place!
I’m sure if you just submit the upgrade again though it will be fine.
