Amex (American Express) Discussion

Amex contactless certainly behaves slightly differently to regular contactless, but I don’t know the technical details.

There are a few places I’ve tried where Amex Apple Pay fails but a Chip & PIN works fine.

Not encountered it for a couple of years though. Not sure if it’s still an issue, or if it’s resolved but merchants are still cautious.

I haven’t had an email but I bought something from our local pharmacy on Thursday and I can see the £5 credit on my account this morning.

You do need to make sure you’ve saved the offer to your card in the app if you haven’t already.

I have it saved, I’ve used it elsewhere in the last few weeks.

I’m sure it should work then, and if not can probably get the credit manually. The restaurant is showing up under a different name on the app but its still pending.

Ah I think that’ll be it. I didn’t get the credit until the transaction had fully cleared. If not I’m sure Amex will credit the money anyway if you chat to them.

Same here but the last few times I got an email right away confirming the credit was coming, maybe its due to a different terminal or something. But yeah I’ll give it the week and then pick it up with Amex if not. No biggie really

I have found this at my local Asda.

Works when presented by Google Pay though :man_shrugging:

I had this when getting my passport pictures taken at a shop. Chip and Pin had to be used and I was using ApplePay.

Just went to asda for beer and pizza for tonight.

Chip and pin was needed.

Now I promise to test Morrisons pay at pump for you next week.

Here’s a strange one.

Amex app shows that my latest statement has been paid in full and updated account balance accordingly.

The strange bit is that the DD does not come out of my account until Tuesday and is still sitting in my Monzo bills pot for said payment :man_shrugging:

It’s a common thing for direct debits, my council tax shows as paid and received a week before it leaves my account. EE usually a few days I think.

I asked this a little further up the thread so you’ll find a few answers directly below this post. I’ve got it again right now too. The balance has totally cleared from my credit card, but the money is in my Monzo account until Tuesday.

Bargain lunch out at Muffin Break as part of the Shop Small promotion this week.

Combined with Eat Out To Help Out for a £21.20 lunch, halved to £10.60, then £5 back in my account from Amex, so just £5.60 :+1:

My panini alone was a fiver!

Two places I’ve been now which were on the merchant map, payment processed but no credit back. CS said you don’t always get an confirmation email and it can take up to x days but its a bit vague as to why its such a slick process at other merchants

Another place was on the map but didn’t take Amex at all!

I’ve had similar. I think it may be a big city v everyone else situation…

One near me on the list is still closed due to covid guidelines :man_shrugging:

Was gonna combo the Eat Out with the spend £10 for a £5-ish dinner.

Not gonna happen now.

It appears amex have modernised parts of their website the “statements & activity” section looks fantastic now! You can search by the business name and see a summary of a period. The MR points page has also been refreshed.

Does anyone have an Amex Referred Rewards Gold Card?

I have an Amex Rewards Low Rate card at the moment and was considering upgrading…Anyone got one and consider it worth it?

First year is free so may miss some of the front end covid issues

I’ve been informed you can ‘change’ within the same category of card i.e. Rewards, has anyone had any experience of this?

Definitely worth it for year 1 (if you can still get it for free). I don’t think it’s worth it for £140/year.

The person I spoke to on chat seemed to think I could still get year 1 for free as an existing cardmember

I have one. Mine is still a charge card, but I think it’s only available as credit now.

Covid and no travelling aside, the two free lounge trips would cover £30/40 of the annual fee for me. And I only convert my points into avios, as I think that’s most cost-effective way of getting value out, and have been making my fee back for the last few years.

So guess depends on whether you’ll spend enough to make it worth it?

Few good offers occasionally but can’t say I see enough I can actually use for them to be much of a factor.
