Amex (American Express) Discussion

You need to just drop them a message in app and they can add it for you there and then.

Going to message them in them app and ask, I’ll edit if they enroll my card or not.

Update the chat enrolled me.

Edit again the customer service is very good, monzo like niceness but with quick response at any time of day, i’m impressed.

Yeah have always found their customer service to be fantastic. Far better than Monzo’s these days, and I would say better than First Direct’s by a fair way too.

Have had some incredible service when dealing with them for refunds and travel insurance stuff in particular.

The problem I have with First Direct is that the frontline staff are great and they’re able to help with fairly basic issues, but anything remotely complex has to be sent to some backend team that can take some time or the staff are clearly hitting up against HSBC systems limits in some way.

I’ve heard Amex is becoming somewhat similar, in that the frontline staff no longer resolve things at the point of contact most of the time and it ends up being escalated, which typically results in a poor experience.

Yeah have always found FD ā€˜good’ but have never had anything too bad for them to deal with.

Re Amex, haven’t had anything go wrong that recently - perhaps a Covid issue with a smaller staff size and maybe longer time for more complex stuff? But also maybe it’s just got worse - hopefully won’t find out any time soon :crossed_fingers:

Resolved my chargeback with Ryanair instantly.

No forms, no passing to other teams, no follow up enquiries.

Top notch :+1:

I’ve always found it near instant in getting someone on chat. I think the last time I needed a transaction disputing it took about 20 seconds to remove it and update my available limit. No fuss at all, was just a done sir, anything else I can help with.

I’d quite like to get ripped off for something so I can test their legendary chargeback handling myself

I will say the one time I’ve needed chat, I made a specific query about a direct debit and was given the wrong information… everyone makes mistakes I guess.

I would rather have had my trip to Ireland, however, covid put paid to that.

My chargeback v Ryanair via Nationwide was a more complex and required more information, though I still got my money back.

Via Barclaycard for a different break :man_facepalming: They took so long that, despite the delays and barriers, I got the refund from Haven before Barclaycard even made the chargeback request! Duly noted.

My experience of Amex for a dispute was pretty poor. I’ve never done one before so had no idea of the process, nothing was really explained to me, the process was confusing, the dispute was closed and I was refunded and then it magically opened again a few months later and then the charge was reinstated to my account. When asked why they said it was because the merchant sent evidence, I asked to see this but was never able to get it so I don’t know what the merchant actually said! (Assuming it was something to do with these bloody refund credit notes that package holiday companies have been issuing).

Ended up just filing the dispute in the small claims court and the travel agent settled before the court date and paid the court fees but it all could have been avoided If Amex actually explained the process to me and investigated the claim properly. I uploaded reams of supporting evidence including receipts, terms and conditions for my booking, the relevant regulations and correspondence with the travel agent where they admitted they were not refunding, only issuing credit notes so it wouldn’t have taken long to work out that I was legally entitled to the refund.

On the plus side, when I filed a complaint with Amex about the handling of it they admitted that they messed up and credited my account £75 :man_shrugging:

After a couple of days having the card I can say it’s got a very good app for a non fintech but the website looks 2003 if you go to view your cashback or any other non standard page.

Felt super strange using it in poundland yesterday. (Found out greggs take it but only via the rewards app so i’ll just use monzo for that)
Worked fine in asda pay at pump but i’m yet to try morrisons pay at pump.

I setup a direct debit to pay the card in full (I can keep it under 30% easy so I may as well do it this way) but it has not shown up in monzo yet as being setup.

I look forward to your feedback on that experience as I have had a few issues in that regard recently.

Would say i’ll try it next week but the independent petrol station in the next village is on shop small so i’m going to go there next week as I get Ā£5 free fuel.

I’m going though Ā£40 worth of fuel (Normally Ā£25) a week as I’ve had to do alot of long journeys at the moment.

Never thought of looking for £5 off petrol.

Checking now :+1:

Depends on how rural you are, it’s not got any oil companies name on at all and has pumps straight out of the 1970’s. (Very rare but if you can find one near you its worth it for the Ā£5 from amex)

City dweller.

No chance lol

Anyone ever used Amex at a merchant on the shop small list (and with it advertised in the shop) but received no confirmation email?

No. I used it, unwittingly, at a garden centre and received a lovely surprise email to state that £5 was on its way back to me

I had only ever really explored Eating and Drinking locations. :man_shrugging:

Anyone tried to use it at a Shop Small business and experienced Transaction declined/failed?

Just curious as the promotion is clearly to try and get you to spend at certain business and, if you end up paying by Visa or Mastercard, it potentially affects your decision to shop there, compared to an alternate small business.

Have not got one for using the small petrol station yet. (On shop small list)

I paid 3p more per litre for nothing. Would cost me more to drive to town as I was not going anyway so no bother.

On another note the lady in there said Amex must be inserted as soon as she saw the card. Is this normal that contactless on Amex doesn’t work.

I’ve been told after 5 working days you can contact Amex to see if they can make a manual adjustment. I will if nothing comes back from the restaurant.

Some corner shops and Holland and Barrett it won’t work contactless but does with chip and pin
