If Google launched a bank. I’d have a second account, I know that much.
A Google debit card? Yes please

I know I know… But I honestly love Google.
Google everything, I even send off all my usage statistics for Google to see. I even have it enabled so they can see what’s on my screen.
I think privacy is the biggest flaw with Google. And tbh, I’m not phased by it at all. There are other ways of going anonymous when and if you need too.
(I never understand the whole privacy argument, like everybody went mad over the xbox kinect… What are you doing that the FBI or whatever want to see? Because they definitely aren’t going to sit and watch you playing video games in your boxers)
Robin Hood didn’t pay taxes and we all love him!
Haha, joking obviously
I wouldn’t be opening an Amazon current account.
I think it’s easy to find this sort of news for about all the big companies not just Amazon. Apple, Google, most big banks are all always looking to not pay anything back in taxes.
I just happened to see it on Facebook
I’m sceptical.
Making a bank is hard enough when it’s your main priority as a company (we know!!!)
Trying to make one as a side project and have it work cohesively with a company as complex as Amazon is a different task entirely. Not saying that they can’t do it, but we’ll have to wait and see.
I have a PayPal Access Card. It’s a debit card that lets you spend directly from your PayPal balance, but the app support is terrible (the PayPal app has no settings or options for the card basically). So whenever I have money in PayPal, it just goes straight to Monzo via Faster Payments.
Point being - on paper, a PayPal debit card seems like a great idea. In practice - not so much.
I understand your point but that’s a bad argument…
Monzo is a very small company in comparison
(however, I feel extremely confident that when Monzo is that big, they will not be doing anything like this)
Very good shout actually,
And I imagine it would be the same with Google and Amazon. With Amazon service is great, but not sure it would work as a bank…
Google, I have no idea if you can even contact them… For a start.
I think the more likely scenario here is that Amazon (and probably Google, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, etc) will start making heavy acquisitions in the fintech space if they all decide that this is the area they want to pursue.
I’m confident that that’s not a path we’d consider though.
I had an Access card!
It’s already at the point of “what exactly is XXX account offering me above and beyond my current bank account?” - I appreciate that question has already been raised in a few other topics.
If Amazon came to the UK with a debit card/bank account, what exactly can they offer that Monzo doesn’t?
Free Prime? Well… That’s worth £80 quid to me right away.
The “innovation” gap is closing by the day - HSBC and FD with their aggregator apps. Instant notifications from others. This “open banking” is driving a lot of the old cumbersome banks in new directions, and the sad truth is, they aren’t far behind Monzo/Starling (ahead in some respects!).
I’d consider an Amazon bank account if it had some excellent benefits - Otherwise… No.
I think it’s worth noting that all reports I’ve seen of Amazon going into banking are about re-selling other banks’ services. Not about actually establishing a banking presence themselves.
(The Mexican story being a bit of an exception, but then they are essentially using prepaid cards, so not a bank.)
They already have their fingers in all the pies. I forget all the things they do sometimes. They need to focus on what they are good at!
A website refresh wouldn’t go a miss! Adverts everywhere, horrible layout.
I still use it a lot though
I have one somewhere unless I tossed it which would be sad, it’s an interesting bit of history…
Google has been there, done that.
the more you know… (Google search time lol)
Oh wow, this exists apparently https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.greenbot.com/article/2105387/the-google-wallet-card-can-be-your-free-reloadable-prepaid-debit-card.amp.html?source=images
Not mine but if you want to see one.
Existed. Past tense. It was a pointless product. Just another bad prepaid debit.
Does look nice though. Exactly what I expected from Google
