Will Monzo Continue To Offer Free ATM Withdrawals Outside the UK?

Directly pass on the costs can get tricky quick (to explain to users). I’m not sure if MasterCard do, but link apparently had different fees depending on remoteness of ATM. To communicate that ATMs on France cost say 20c but German ones 25c, could end up with a pretty long list to publish

Will there be higher rates in places you rely on cash since there is little card adoption such as in many south east asian nations, african nations?

It will be whatever Monzo get charged. They do not plan on gaining revenue here. So in Europe will be cheaper than the rest of the world.

I’m hoping for an annual fee free allowance, I don’t use cash much when abroad, but it’s nice to know if I needed any I can just withdraw the money and get the best rate.

Sorry all, that’s my fault for travelling to Russia a lot

You can withdraw euros in England, check London ATMs.

Yes you can, but the exchange rates offered by those UK ATMs offering euros are not as great as you would get if you used your Monzo card to withdraw euros in Italy as @alexs suggested.

But Monzo will know where customers are, hence should only show the information necessary for that specific country :ok_hand:

That’s true but according to one of the team, ATM operators don’t send the details of charges consistently so Monzo can’t always see the amount that the user’s requested (to withdraw) vs what they paid.

I’d want to know before, not after the fact. If a withdrawal will cost £5 I’m gonna withdraw more than if it cost 50p

It started already ?

I wouldn’t mind paying to withdraw, but only if I needed to take out an excessive amount.

This year, I only recall withdrawing cash once. I only ever do so when absolutely necessary, I usually use Apple Pay or a contactless card. Even abroad, I would only withdraw a small amount, as I’d already have cash before leaving, or I’d pay directly on card.

I think the fairest option would be to have a limit of say, £200/€200 per week/month or whatever you decide, and you only pay if you go above that.

Don’t worry it hasn’t  Monzo hasn’t consulted the community about the different options or made any announcements yet.

This isn’t true of Halifax Clarity. Interest is charged from the day of the transaction regardless of if you pay in full. This is how they can offer to charge no fees, otherwise.

The only way to prevent or minimise interest is to transfer the money to cover the transaction on the same day.

Yes but I have no overdraft and no direct debits nor bank with Halifax but carry a clarity card so not quite sure where there ripping me off I carry both revolute and monzo and use what’s best on the day I have never paid ATM fees since I’ve done this

Hello, this is my first post

I’m probably not the average user. I’m based in London but was temporarily relocated to the US for work and Monzo is my main way of spending here (I haven’t used my Lloyds debit card yet, in two months). Although my Monzo card failed a couple of times (online and high street shop), I’m very happy with my experience.

Anyways, the main reason why I got the card was the fee free for international use. However, even if you do start charging for ATM withdrawals, I would still use it. In my experience, even in a small city where they don’t know what a contactless card is, ATM withdrawals are very few, I would dare say almost non-existent in my case (of course, it depends if you like to have cash on you or how you like to spend you money). But I guess it’s a matter of educating ourselves to make smart withdrawals. Also, in my opinion, it should be on an user and withdrawal basis and not charging everyone monthly fees.

As long as you keep no fee shop transactions, Monzo would still be my choice of card abroad, as I don’t see any other option as good as Monzo.

Hi all,
This is my first post. Monzo’s fee-free ATM withdrawals and perfect foreign exchange rates were what originally led me to apply for the card.
I travel to Malta a few times a year and, though an EU country, many of the little bars and restaurants I frequent do not readily accept card payments. So it was a boon for me to be able to pop to an ATM to withdraw cash knowing that I was not going to be penalised for doing so.
Also it was easy to control my spending, topping up my Monzo card every few days as needed, and not returning to the UK with unspent Euro notes.
I would be most disappointed if Monzo introduced ATM charges, as this is definitely the main attraction of the card to me.
Having said that, I love the whole ethos of the bank, the app is great and customer service has been exemplary when I have needed to contact them.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this

I’d be interested to hear whether you would be prepared to pay a fee to cover the costs that Monzo’s incurring for ATM withdrawals or not? And are there any particular fee structures that would work for you?

I’m of the opinion that UK + EU should be free (as the fee isn’t too high), while ATM withdrawals outside of the EU should incur a charge proportional to how much extra it would have cost, simply because they are so much higher in general. Right now, as we’re still in beta, the number of people who have high bills for ATM usage will be pretty dang small, but that seems completely unsustainable for general launch of the current account!

I know Monzo don’t know the fee for a withdrawal ahead of time, but you can show this information on the “Welcome to $country! £10 = X…” screen and in travel reports as to what the ATM fees are.

:monzo: could also potentially make it so the first $x transactions in a given period (3 months?) are fee-free, and then send a feed item to a user when they’re getting close/exceed those, but that’s 1) a lot of extra business logic, and 2) still results in pretty high ATM fees for monzo.

If I remember correctly, Tom has said all point of sale transactions will be fee free and also at the MasterCard rate :raised_hands:
