✅ Integration with Amex

I’m not sure that claim flies. Sure api is always going to be easier but it’s not like screen scraping is any hassle.

I understood that the new regulations (PSD2) ban screen scraping. Though, that said, it’s dependent on APIs being out there and working (and there’s almost certainly more nuance) so will work for now but can’t be seen as a long term solution.

Stuff takes time to develop and get working. That’s just an inconvenient reality.

From the update earlier in the week, until TrieLayer get a level of reliability they’re happy with from the AMEX API, they’re not going to pass on whatever problems they’re experiencing to the rest of us.

Lots of things COULD happen but TrueLayer integration is what IS happening and that’s how far it’s got so far.

I followed up with TrueLayer myself and they have said:

“We support Barclaycard and Amex but it’s up to Monzo to enable them for their clients. We would advise you to contact Monzo regarding this issue”

They support Amex and Barclaycard through credential sharing (screen scraping). Monzo aren’t supporting this method because it is being deprecated.

The question for Truelayer is when will they support these credit cards via Open Banking. That’s what Monzo is waiting for and that’s the question @giovanni2s asked.

BarclayCard support has moved to the new interface, it’s just reporting as being problematic which is why Monzo have disabled it for the moment.

Perhaps that was a beta version.

Truelayer’s own table (updated 2 days ago) does not yet report support for Barclaycard via Open Banking.

Sounds like they might have pulled it because, well, it was a bit crap?

I don’t have a credit card but I’m interested in either the Platinum or the Nectar.

I’ve been reading both threads and can’t see whats holding this up in being integrated into Monzo, have Amex still not done the APIs meant to be ready for September? Or is it now over to Monzo to implement?

@UEF @jph @anyone Also am I right in thinking this?

Platinum Cashback

Say I spend exactly £1250 month on it for easy maths, thats £250 cashback, minus £25 fee.

(£1250) Mth 1 *0.05 = £62.5
(£2500) Mth 2 *0.05 = £62.5
(£3750) Mth 3 (Hit the £125 limit so zero cashback?)
(£5000) Mth 4 * 0.01 = £12.50
(£6250) Mth 5 * 0.01 = £12.50
(£7500) Mth 6 * 0.01 = £12.50
(£8750) Mth 7 * 0.01 = £12.50
(£10000) Mth 8 * 0.01 = £12.50
(£11250) Mth 9 * 0.0125 = £ 15.625 (swaps to 1.25%)
(£12500) Mth 10 * 0.0125 = £ 15.625
(£13750) Mth 11 * 0.0125 = £ 15.625
(£15000) Mth 12 * 0.0125 = £ 15.625

(62.5*2)+(12.50*5)+(15.625*4) # £250

Year 2 onwards - £162.50 cashback, minus £25 fee.

(£1250) Mth 1 * 0.01 = £12.50
(£2500) Mth 2 * 0.01 = £12.50
(£3750) Mth 3 * 0.01 = £12.50
(£5000) Mth 4 * 0.01 = £12.50
(£6250) Mth 5 * 0.01 = £12.50
(£7500) Mth 6 * 0.01 = £12.50
(£8750) Mth 7 * 0.01 = £12.50
(£10000) Mth 8 * 0.01 = £12.50
(£11250) Mth 9 * 0.0125 = £ 15.625 (swaps to 1.25%)
(£12500) Mth 10 * 0.0125 = £ 15.625
(£13750) Mth 11 * 0.0125 = £ 15.625
(£15000) Mth 12 * 0.0125 = £ 15.625

(12.50*8)+(15.625*4) # £162.50

Nectar

This should also be £250

(£1250) Mth 1 = 2500 points
(£2500) Mth 2 = 2500 points (+ 20000 points for over £2k)
(£3750) Mth 3 = 2500 points
(£5000) Mth 4 = 2500 points
(£6250) Mth 5 = 2500 points
(£7500) Mth 6 = 2500 points
(£8750) Mth 7 = 2500 points
(£10000) Mth 8 = 2500 points
(£11250) Mth 9 = 2500 points
(£12500) Mth 10 = 2500 points
(£13750) Mth 11 = 2500 points
(£15000) Mth 12 = 2500 points

(12*2500)+20000 # 50000 points = £250

Looks right too me, skim reading. Though use TopCashback to get the first £25 free mostly/all off.

They get it back in other places - the fees they charge retailers, anyone going over their limit (which to be fair is usually enormous) and ATM withdrawals. So do none of these

Thanks, I’m just looking at the Nectar too, there’s no fee in year 1.

I’m assuming the points are added to the base so if I got +40 points filling up at Sainsburys fuel (1pt per £), I would also get another +80 credited from Amex  But just +80 at a non Sains fuel station.

My life insurance with Sains pays double but I’ve just checked it doubles the base only. So filling up £40 that should mean 160 points or 80p back in real money.

If it’s not obvious you should be pushing as much spend through it as possible. Definitely make sure you do actually hit that £10k target to get the 1.25%. Once you add in some MS it’s very simple to make a decent amount of cash out of it.

How do you use Monzo in the Amex equation? I’m just though what is Monzo then used for? I have my bills/savings elsewhere and its currently only my monthly spend account, does it become redundant…

Do you set a DD with Amex to pay the min to cover and pay it off manually? Or make sure you have the balance to match the bill amount of the previous months spending?

Do you use Pots as a way of tracking how much you’ve spent in the categories?

Like have a food, fuel and fun pot, and withdraw the same amount spent on the Amex card back into the main balance?

Or do you use a third-party via open banking for monitoring spend?

Is there any callback (IFTTT?) so if I spend on Amex it takes the same amount from Monzo and makes a payment to Amex to cancel it out?

Edit: just saw this. Well this works as well.

I don’t. If I can use Amex instead, it never makes financial sense to use Monzo.

I also never overspend so there’s no need to worry about setting up ifttt triggers to pay off bills. I just pay every month like normal.

For categorisation the next thing that works for me at the moment is Yolt which can collate my Amex spending with other cards which I have to use on the rare occasions Amex is not accepted.

Thanks, I might give Yolt a spin.

:ghost: Spookily I’ve just literally switched my legacy to Lloyds to get the free £125 so the advert would be my view if I go with Amex. :joy:

Was just looking for another setting and came across the credit card integration page and noticed that Amex still isn’t supported.

I thought this would be ready September time? Any updates?

If you have a search you’ll find your answer.

If you can’t be bothered, it’s Truelayer and Amex’s fault.
