Collected thoughts on card design

I like everything about that, apart from the oversized logo.

Is that a Starling Bank card?

Don’t know, can’t see the bank’s name on it…

Spotted a differently designed Lloyds card for their Smart Start spending account - Smart Start | Youth and Student Accounts | Lloyds Bank

This is similar to their Halifax and Bank of Scotland youth cards.

It could be the beginning of potential new card design formats across their portfolio.

I have to say, they’ve navigated the different design elements far better here, in my opinion, than many portrait cards (HSBC’s is particularly bad).

What is their Bank of Scotland Youth card like? I can only find the older one with that building in Glasgow on it?

You can see it here:

It’s simple and clean, and follows the same design convention as their other cards.

I, for one, welcome the advent of vertical cards

Now only if RBS redesigned some of their… special cards with a lovely big logo in the middle. Someone should make a mock-up

Thank you!

Definitely wouldn’t surprise me if they eventually change all their cards to this design. They are all really nice portrait cards. I especially like the Lloyds and Bank of Scotland ones, mostly because they don’t have any part of their logo on it twice.

Oh, I prefer the Halifax one as it seems the tidiest. :joy:

Lloyds would look much better if it was written as:

Lloyds
Bank

At the top instead of down the side, but I guess once in a wallet (upside down to the rest) it would look in line with the others.

I think writing Lloyds Bank like that would make it look quite crowded and messy. I like it down the side, and also helps when it’s in a wallet with slots for horizontal cards.

I’m sure they will redesign all of their cards soon as they are going to be switching from Visa to Mastercard across the group.

I always liked how unobtrusive the Visa logo was on the card, being monochrome, so hopefully they will also incorporate the Mastercard logo in a similar inoffensive manner.

It’s one of the things I don’t really like about the Mastercard logo. It stands out too much on cards with completely different colours. I works with the Santander card as it is red, but doesn’t on quite a few other cards.

It often doesn’t work on red cards, actually, as Mastercard have rules around the logo needing to contrast with the background, to be readable, so when applied to a red card they put a white “halo” around it - to get it to stand out - which I really don’t like!

World Elite tier cards can use the silver monochrome logo, like the Chase debit card, which is cool and more versatile in many ways. It tends to be seen on black cards generally, though, as most banks want to brand “premium” accounts as black.

My Samsung Pay+ card is black and has the metallic logo.

There we are then, that proves my point!

Other than the fact it isn’t a premium account, but it’s clearly designed to look like one so the effect is the same really.

I actually like the white border around the Mastercard logo. Definitely makes the logo look better and more defined imo.

I think it looks too defined, and that’s a key reason I dislike it (it detracts from the rest of the card, and makes the logo look too busy).

Still, I’ll agree to disagree!

I actually think the white border would make the Mastercard logo on the Monzo card look better. Something about it doesn’t look right at the moment.

I think one of the reasons why the white border works well with Santander is that white is a brand colour as well as red so it isn’t strange seeing the red and white next to each other.
