I’m curious what would require a regular 500 mile round trip without stopping in Cornwall for very long. That said, I think you’d likely need 2 stops to charge if you were to do this with an EV with a 250 mile range. You’d likely want to stop near Exeter for about 2.5 hours (perhaps for an extended lunch), then again near Bristol on your return and stop for 2.5 hours (perhaps for some dinner). It’ll definitely extend your day by at least 5 hours, but should cost you a fraction in fuel, and emissions.
(note: you could definitely stop for less time if you’re happy to stop more often)
In the Summer my car has a range of over 340
Miles and I could, but wouldn’t, charge from empty to 80% within an hour, faster on the latest IONITY chargers. So an Hyundai Kona, see the first post, would enable me to travel from Birmingham to Cornwall in one leg.
I think I said it earlier in this topic but electric cars are so ugly and lacking in features.
Someone needs to bring out a nice looking and reasonably priced EV. Unless you shell out big money for a Tesla or i8 (for example) they’re just so bland and unsuitable for long commutes.
An eleaf or whatever they’re called could be super futuristic with tonnes of features but they’re just not nice looking or practical.
My point being is that you can’t get both with electric cars at the moment without spending a lot. They’re only suitable for pottering around cities like London and not for those who rack up miles on the motorway or live further north like I do who need a decent all rounder.
They’re definitely unaffordable at the moment. Getting the longer range e-Leafs that I’d need for work leaves you only a few quid away from a model 3 Tesla.
I’d have a model 3 but even second hand they’re holding their value at the moment which is outside of the average person’s price range for a car. So naturally you start comparing what you could have for that amount of money…
That’s the process I’ve just been through. Work gave us a budget of £450 + fuel for a company car, but the company car tax would have been pretty steep, even on something like a 330E. The others just don’t have the range, unless you pay for upgrades upon which were back at the Model 3 just being better.
We’ve looked at literally everything, only the Model 3 made sense, does the miles we need to do and also has access to the super chargers in Grantham which should serve as a halfway point for us to charge up.
Seriously though, the Model 3 has fart mode, talk about sold on one feature.
For half the price you could get a non-electric car with really high MPG. Then use the money you’ve saved to treat the family to a nice holiday or get that extension on your house you’ve always talked about.
Like many others on here, a fully electric car is just not economically viable for me.
Initial cost, lack of home or work charging make it almost impossible.
I get free travel included with my job, and the only time I have to use a car is when this travel is not available.
My annual mileage is about 3 thousand, so there is now way I could recoup the extra expense of even a hybrid car, yet alone a fully EV.

Less than 50% of people in London have access to a car of any description. Of the other 50%, many have one for convenience, and could quite easily do without one.
I’m mainly talking about cities other than London. There literally no good reason to own a car in most of London.
(of course more people outside London should also go car free but with the state of public transport and facilities for cyclists, it’s not always easy)
I would love for there to be cycle lanes all the way to my work, I’d definitely go down to a single vehicle if there better infrastructure for cyclists, not to mention the health benefits. I mean there must be loads of people that work within a 10mile radius of their work
There’s needs to be a lot more done but more productive are provisions other than cycle lanes (law, education, culture in general) . You definitely don’t need cycle lanes to cycle to work though!
