Amex (American Express) Discussion

I got an email on Platinum

Platinum and only some lounges:

This is nice for peak periods, but four isn’t exactly many…

Edit: actually just seen that supplementary cardholders get their own allowance, so this is ok.

Am I being dumb? You could always prebook no?

For a fee, yes. But now Amex Plat holders get 4 free pre-bookings a year.

Finally a useful offer on my BAPP card, £50 off £250 Radisson spend, which will be useful on my weekend away in Aarhus.

Just had these playing cards arrive in the post, I’ll get more use out of them than the Deliveroo credit on my soon to be dumped PRGC

How did you get these? How can one get some? :eyes:

I found them on eBay. Promo bits seem to pop up on a regular basis and usually pretty cheap. There was a massive Amex Gold card beach towel a while back but I thought better of it.

There are quite a few designs for playing cards: platinum variants in a fancy box (pricey, mind) and the classic green card version occasionally turns up.

I have booked the Radisson in Oslo so was a very useful offer for me too.

Questions about the amex rewards card - can I apply for it if I already have the everyday cashback card? And do you still get the offers to use in app? (Like to use the offers every now and then, but don’t want the minimum £3000 spend as difficult to use amex for most spending where I live.)

Yes, you can have more than one Amex credit card (3 I think?). You’ll get the offers that you have to save to the card, but if you’ve held an Amex in the past two years you won’t be eligible for the new customer sign up bonus.

You won’t be eligible for the new bonus just as mentioned above, you can also have multiple cards, I currently have 4 AmEx cards, when I did a eligibility check a while back it said I was 9/10 eligible for a new card so maybe the limit is 5 cards :man_shrugging: maybe even more

I think the limit is 5 yeah.

I don’t have any amex cards but I have been tempted to get one. Can’t decide between the cashback everyday , cashback or the rewards card if I were to apply.

Rewards card probably best if you have lower spend as the cashback ones have a minimum spend requirement of £3000 per card year to actually get the cashback.

Rewards are the most versatile way to earn something back. But the cashback cards have a whopping 5% back in the first three months (with the £3000 minimum yearly spend to qualify).

Thanks guys. Rewards card seems good way of getting some money value without a charge and no minimum spend. I’ve loved the everyday cashback card with the app and great customer service, but have stopped using it because minimum spend is touch and go if I reach it.

I made a chart to work out which card offers the best return, ignoring sign up bonuses, but accounting for the annual fee

Assumptions:

  • 1 MR will remain worth 1 Nectar point. All other redemption paths are ignored.
  • 1 Nectar point will remain worth half a penny at Sainsburys/Argos
  • Customer will have no issue spending <£200 at Sainsburys/Argos (including Sainsburys fuel) yearly, even if they don’t spend a penny there at any other time. If this assumption is untrue ignore ARCC/Nectar columns

I’ve completely ignored airmiles/hotel rewards because none of them have a straightforward redemption value.

The Nectar card is the sweet spot for most.

BA Amex can work out at around 2% if you get the companion voucher and take the ‘right’ flights. I agree though that it’s more complicated to do a like for like comparison with it.

Companion voucher has got very expensive to get now. You can also get well over 2p value per point if you get the right flights.
