Amex (American Express) Discussion

I was planning to start adding my nieces as supplementary cardholders on my Amex Platinum (charge card version) for insurance and emergencies; first one turns 18 next month and has just started travelling solo.

But might wait to see what happens in terms of benefits. At £650 it’s getting pricey and in my opinion the benefits aren’t improving in line with the increased fee.

I could probably buy her an annual policy of her own for around £100. The reason I was leaning to Amex was that I currently pay for it and the card could be useful if she needs to pay for something unexpected when away from home. But then again, I could transfer funds in seconds to her own card these days.

You could, but if the place she wants to book into requires a credit card, that won’t work. That’s why I added my ‘little’ guy on as a supplementary card holder a while back.

Good point. Thank you.

Every product has been devalued one way or another in the last 10 years.

Nectar is perhaps the least affected, being basically the same as it was but with a £6 higher annual fee.

I still miss my Costco Amex…

Can you product switch from BA card to say the blue Amex rewards card?

Or is it a fresh application

Very surprised to see this in my offers section this morning. Limited to the first 1667 to save, so will probably be gone very soon.

Yeah I have the same on my Marriott Amex

Claimed thanks!

I got spend £70 for £5 back on the Gold.

I’ve had my Nectar card for so long I don’t get charged an annual fee…

Lower reward rate tho? ISTR at some point around 2010 they added an annual fee and let existing customers choose between either taking the annual fee or accepting 1 Nectar point per £ rather than 2.

Yes that rings a bell! I knew they’d offered me a choice at some point.

Save to Card to get a £5 GBP statement credit when you make a single, eligible transaction of £40+ in participating store(s) or online at Tesco by 24/11/2024. Valid once per Card for the first 2,500 Cardmembers to save.

So £5 for £40 spend, and 2500 available in my case

EDIT to add: just realized that each secondary cardholder has the same, but separate, offer ? I have 2 secondary cardholders, does it mean that (as a household) we can benefit 3 times ? We just opted in 3 times, separately.

Apparently, the Platinum card changes should be announced some point this week.

Yes, each card will have to be used tho, you won’t get 3 bonuses on one transaction.

Of course, but managing 3 shops for the next 3 weeks is fairly do-able.

£1000 annual fee

Considering they increased the fee last year, I don’t think it would be a smart move to do it again a second year running. But who knows.

Got an email from Amex about the changes to the benefits. Not much has changed, I reckon they’ll remove pro rata refunds before they introduce drastic benefit changes.

What frustrates me about a few of these credits are that even the main travel blogs are saying how they managed to “find” a restaurant and had a meal when in the UK or overseas when they weren’t naturally going to anyway.

Much like Monzo perks if you weren’t going to eat out then you’re not saving anything by seeking something out for the sake of getting the credits.
