Amex (American Express) Discussion

yep have the receipt

i’m willing to invoice them for the postage if they dare lol (recorded so they may try to refuse the letter to avoid paying up)

It also clearly states that they accept amex on NCP’s website.

It’s happened to me at Sainsbury’s before. No pending payment, no reduction to available credit. Think you’ve got away with it. Appeared out of nowhere weeks later

Appeared yesterday, they must process card payments offline.

My local chip shop does this due to poor internet connection where they are, shows in Monzo 2 days later.

Does anyone know if an additional cardholder is able to add their card to Apple Pay?

They 100% can

Thanks both!

So I’ve just had a letter through.

I currently have the Amex Low Rate Rewards card, I think the rate is about 9% and my limit is 25k.

They sent a letter saying due to a review on my account and the increased risk (non-specific) they’ll be increasing my rate to 15%.

Has this happened to anyone else? I called to moan about it and they asked if I had any missed payments or otherwise adverse credit etc. but I confirmed no such thing has happened.

I know they don’t sell this low rate card anymore but I can’t fathom why they’ve done this.

There’s a thread on MSE about the similar letters being received.

As soon as I read it - I had a feeling now that they’re no longer offering these low APR cards, they will want to increase others.

Yes. Just had one through the letterbox.

They’ve reviewed my risk profile and increased my rate from 22.2% to 26.1% wef 16 Aug 2021.

I can fully see how my profile can be seen as an increased risk because, since Jan 2021, I have only used my Amex to (a) initially use up my year 1 cashback, then (b) use it to pay my monthly subscription to Netflix, paid in full each month.

There is a HIGH risk that they’ll earn ZERO interest payments off me.

Good move :clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:

If I posed an increased risk they’d surely severely reduce my available credit, not increase the charge.

I sniff a complaint coming on. They’re obviously doing this systematically and it’s not related to something I’ve done.

They would then earn less money from you and customers with similar profiles. They want to earn more money from their customers (hence not lowering credit limits) but they want to be rewarded more for the risk they are taking in lending money (hence higher borrowing rates).

They’re also taking on another risk that they will lose customers, but they will have accounted for this in their planning.

Theyve also changed the terms on the BA card. Must be feeling the pinch

I’ve only been a user for around 9 months. In that time they’ve:

  • slashed my credit limit from 3.5k to 1.4k after a few months when they saw I was spending below 1k a month and paying in full (I think).

  • changed their ‘spend £10 at small shops and get £5 cashback’ deal (just about worth it at some of the lower margin shops) to ‘spend £15 and get £5 back’ (still decent offer but this 33% off is not worth it for me to go out of my way to shop ssomewhere different when I can get the same things 50% cheaper by not shopping small’

  • increased everyone’s threshold from 5k to 10k spend to start earning 1%.

  • the above about increasing lots of people’s rates in the hope of earning more income.

I’m definitely going to stop using it after the cashback anniversary as it won’t be worth it to get about £1-2 a month cashback for putting all my spending through it and obfuscating my sweet Monzo data for the privilege.

I have the low rate card so will expect a letter!

And that was my main reason for signing up to Amex.
I was going all out for the 2for1 companion voucher, but don’t think I’ll be trying that hard just for a seat in cattle class.
I think once I have enough Avios for a couple of Euro flights, they’ll be cashed in and it’ll be bye bye Amex.

I have three companion vouchers, but no companion. I usually travel solo.

That is my credit limit, not that I ever go near it, but I like decent limits for emergencies, to give me the chance to get the funds out of my savings later.

Amazon Platinum is £1200,which was fine until this month, thanks to car MOT, service, insurance, tax, and of course my Amazon spend. Have froze card now as £17 left, until first DD clears, clearing this months statement.

Have plenty of back ups though

I’ve not had any letter so far, though I have a modest limit that I don’t want increased already so slashing that wouldn’t do much for them.

They could increase my interest rate to 1,000% and I’d still not pay them anything given I pay in full each month.

The reduction in “value” of the BA aspect did give me a sour taste; but it just means that after I’ve spent my current companion voucher, I’ll just be using it to collect air miles to use on short haul flights. It’s still “something for nothing” on my everyday spend.

The shop small did kick though. I used to use that a lot. For me, £10 is a good amount to spend at a local place for a quick lunch, or a few pints at a local pub, and I used to use it to the full extent and actively search for small local places.

£15 is just a tiny bit too much to justify, so I’ve only used it once this year.

I remember when it was £10 spend and no limit to it; used to go crazy during the (I think it was one) week in December it ran. Then they put a £25 cap on the savings.

Same for me.
Although I live in a fairly large town, the number of participants is pitiful.
So far I haven’t been able to use it at all :sob:
