Amex (American Express) Discussion

Yes they can allow a charge over your limit. I don’t know the ins and outs of it to know what to do when they do, but they can allow it yes.

I can only imagine it might mess with your credit report so I’d get that sorted between yourself and your workplace ASAP.

Amex generally only report to the CRAs once a month, so as long as you pay it off before they next report you should be OK.

Thanks. That’s partly reassuring.

Get a nice pile of Avios or points for it?

I’m now looking into the refund and rebill option, so probably not. Much rather have the credit score than the points

Also, lenders aren’t really bothered about one-off incidents - they’re more concerned with longer patterns of behaviour. Even if it was showing as over the limit for one month, so long as it’s back to normal the following month you should be fine.

When is your statement date? I ask because there’s a scenario here where the charge falls into statement period A, but the refund falls into statement period B.

You would still need to pay the 60k statement balance and then have it refunded. Ideally both the debit and the refund fall into the same statement period.

I usually get the statement on the 26th of the month and pay straight away. So I guess I have a couple of weeks for the refund and rebill, which should be enough

Reminder if you have a platinum card, make sure to use the Harvey Nichols £50 credit offer before the end of this month.

They’re scrapping the benefit from 1st July.

Is there anything replacing it?

Pretty sure that’s just the reset. It typically resets twice a year and you get an expiry before the ‘reset’ benefit with the £50 for the other half of the year comes in.

Haven’t seen anyone saying it’s being scrapped online, so assuming it’s just the usual.

They increased the dining credit to £400, so that in theory is the replacement.

HfP have also confirmed it’s not coming back. It’ll only be available for Centurion card holders going forward.

Head for Points have been saying it’s going for a number of months now. Amex CS reps have said it’s resetting in July but the assumption is that it’s false. Maybe they’re just thinking it’s going to get renewed because that’s what usually happens.

The HN offer now shows that it expires in 5 days. It used to say December (I think).

So pretty sure it’s gone for good and replaced with the dining credits.

I had an issue with crediting the dining credit, Amex said the restaurant wasn’t part of the offer but it was. Even after seeing it on the website they said it didn’t count. Escalated it and got the £100 and on top of that I got £25 for their mistake and how they handled it.

I ended up calling up Amex to confirm and it’s definitely going. HfP were correct.

Not that I’ll miss it as I don’t even shop in HN, it just forced me to go because of the credit.

But the Platinum offer becomes less and less enticing overall.

That’s a pity. Their breakfasts are good.

Can I just sense check something regarding Platinum car hire insurance.

We rented a car in Rome last week. It was hot and we were dragging suitcases and a kid through the central station. When we arrived at Avis we just got in the car and left, I didn’t do my usual thing of checking and documenting the condition of the car (my mistake, I know!)

Anyway we’re driving along to our first destination and we noticed that the mileage of the vehicle was quite a bit higher than what was on the rental agreement. Enough for us to be charged extra distance. We took photos, contested it and it was fixed by Avis.

The next day when we came to drive the car we noticed some damage on the passenger side door. It wasn’t on the agreement, but we’re pretty sure it was on the vehicle when we picked it up and not caused by us.

Fast forward to drop off day and we’ve of course been charged a few hundred euros for the damage. I could contest this with Avis. They’ve already set the precedent that the details on the agreement were incorrect, but I’m also thinking should I just claim this back via Amex?

Has anyone here claimed on that insurance before? I couldn’t care less about the flow of money from one big company to another, but I’m thinking it will be less stress and I’ll be in the same financial position at the end if I just claim on the insurance and be done with it. Does that make sense?

In fact, I’m going to have to contact Avis again anyway because I have the final bill now and they’ve charged me for the extra kms anyway despite saying in writing that they’d fixed the issue so I may as well try contesting the damage at the same time and see where I land.

New Platinum card? Probably with higher fees as well…
