Zero

I joined the waiting list. Downloaded the app. Set up an account. And deleted it 10 minutes later.

Sounds like they could be closing their doors later this year I think, unless they add something really attractive.

I don’t think you need to worry about closing it as they’ll be closing down the whole operation before too long

Added! I worry about it long term, but I really like the look and feel of the app.

Significantly faster than some others (cough Plutus cough)

Hey,

We wanted to let you know that we’re updating our Terms & Conditions.

These updates reflect enhancements to our features and a change to our fees for ordering a physical card.

Most Important Update
From 9th June 2025, there will be a £9.99 fee (including shipping) for initial card orders. This card fee won’t be applied until both Apple Pay and Google Pay are available.

FAQ’s
What if my card is lost or stolen, will I have to pay £9.99 again?
If your card is lost or stolen and you need to order a replacement, these will be charged at £6.99 each.

Why are you charging for physical cards?
To support our mission of reducing plastic waste and emissions, we’re introducing a card order fee to encourage the use of digital payment methods (e.g. Apple Pay and Google Pay).

How will I use Zero without a physical debit card?
You’ll still be able to use your virtual debit card for online payments and you’ll also be able to add your card to Apple Pay and Google Pay for in-store and online purchases. If you want a physical card too, you’ll be able to order one and pay the £9.99 fee.

The fact they’re calling this sort of thing a green move probably says a lot & a lot about ethical consumption marketing generally :joy:

It also means they’ve got a date in mind for when they’ll have Apple Pay launched.

Although a tenner for the initial card is a bit steep - £5 would seem more reasonable.

Definitely not ‘zero’ anymore, at least on the charges front.

Can we close it, or have they not implemented that yet?

If you don’t buy the physical card and rely on Google/Apple Pay, what happens when you pay for your weekly shop for £102 on Google P and they tell you to put your card in “because Google limit is £100”?
This happened to me this morning in Morrisons. Fortunately I had the physical card with me (Barclaycard)

I used to hit the buffers with £100 in Tesco then they’d to take items out to get It below £100 as I don’t carry cards at all.

Kind of implies that when the card expires, you’re looking at £6.99, but doesn’t make that clear.

Pity. Looked like quite a good backup card for overseas.

I don’t think that’s implied at all. If your card is lost or stolen…

I’ve closed my Zero account.
It was a fairly manual process (ie - sent a message via ‘contact us’ on their website to ask them) and they gave me a warning that if I close I wont be able to ever reopen or reactive it and ‘that decision is final’.

After I confirmed all that, I checked and when I loaded the app it said my account was closed.

Although they’re still spamming me with their emails ie - I got the one today about the card charges. (ah-ha - just noticed there is an ‘unsubscribe’ link in that).

What’s the deal with these new banks and the one and done stance? Why do none of them let you come back?

Cost, admin, resource, anything in existence to make their lives easier.

I reckon this is likely marking the end of them given that they’ve only 3500 registered customers, and that’s with quite a loose definition of registered customer.

This isn’t particularly directed at anyone, but I don’t understand the delight many seem to have in predicting the impending doom of all the smaller start ups.

Kroo, Algbra, Zero, Zopa, that Estonian one I can’t remember the name of! Sure be sceptical, but it’s as if people are snarkily willing them to fail all the time.

I don’t delight in predicting failure, it’s just that some have so obviously not thought things through.

In fact, I’m delighted that Kroo have quietly improved and I use them more and more.

Zero adding the charges just removed it as a viable option for me. Algbra just doesn’t have an attraction to me.

As I said, I wasn’t pointing the finger at anyone in particular - you included.

It’s just a general vibe, and I find it odd.
