Why Irish Residence Permit card is not a valid document?

I am not an Irish citizen but living in Ireland for around 3 years and have a valid Irish Residence Permit but Monzo is not accepting it as a valid document. Why is that so? All non-irish use it for all other banks, then why monzo is rejecting it?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks

@Cian might be best for this.

May be a bug as most banks do accept them and a quick google search shows Revolut and other neo banks accept Irish permit card so it’s likely not to do with regulations more likely just that Monzo have missed it in their list of approved documents

can we escalate this please? As it will be the same problem for all non-irish residents

But those will surely have a passport?

This issue is probably what happens when no one in the developer team is a foreigner. Hope it gets resolved soon. You might get their attention faster by tweeting.

Non-EU citizen*

The IRP is for Non-EU, EEA, or Swiss citizens.

So you are not an Irish citizen, you are a resident :face_with_monocle:

I am a native Lithuanian, living in the UK, so using Lithuanian :lithuania: passport where I need :white_check_mark: (usually no problems)

Yes, my OH uses her Australian passport. Residence cards are no longer issued in the UK which might be why they don’t accept residence cards.

Developers don’t make those sort of decisions

We don’t accept them at work as ID and stopped quite some months ago. Their passport, regardless of country, was fine.

What I meant is had they had non-EEA staff in the team, someone would have pointed that out during the product design stage. :slightly_smiling_face:

People need to remember we are talking about a totally different country with different laws/regulations. While in the UK using any passport is enough now, in other countries the residence permit is a valid verification document.

Seems like the IRP can be used as a proof of ID for some banks in Ireland. Monzo either forgot to add it as an option or made the decision to not accept it as a proof of ID.

Monzo can freely choose what documents they use to verify accounts, as long as legal of course.

Monzo specifically list “biometric residency permit” as a valid form of ID which the IRP is. Again it’s most likely a bug not a choice, there’s no legal obligation for Monzo to accept it but it does fall under Biometric Residency Permit so they should by their own website claiming it’s an accepted document

Common thing to see assumptions without research that just because one country doesn’t accept it that people assume the others also don’t. As you’ve correctly said there are two very different countries here

Update: passport from my home country worked and I can use monzo now. But i think IRP should work as well.

We have variations here too though. Some banks allow a provisional driving licence but some require a full one. It’s not a legal basis just an internal policy.
