What's the Last Bit of Tech You Bought?

Don’t you think the Stark one is a bit disappointing in design though? I think they could have done a lot better.

I like it in an understated way

Things are too bleak up north to show off

Yeah of course  I’ve been reading reviews and checking out comments on their Facebook posts for a long while. They’re also used in all the major gaming tournaments too.

Most people say that they are expensive but so worth it :man_shrugging: However, it’s not due to arrive for another month though so you might have to remind me

I really like the ‘birds of pray’ Harley Quinn one, but don’t think it would suit me

I’m tempted by those chairs now lol.

Plain and dark for work and the charcoal blue for home

Google is giving everyone 2 months access to Pro for free

However, Microhard has taken the monthly Xbox Live payment as usual - how can they sleep at night? :rage::video_game:

Why wouldn’t they?

Oops, I failed to include the sarcasm & /sarcasm tags on that commit :man_facepalming:

Haha thanks

Just like the whole “never did I think I’d be excited over a bank”, I now have that same feeling for a chair. Who’d have thought it! :see_no_evil:

Oh, I didn’t get the batman version in the end. I went for the black on black, with a bit of suede :ok_hand: :relieved:

Those socks do look tempting to be honest…

I’m all for paying more for quality, as they do last!

Two words: Happy Socks.

Seriously worth the investment - the most comfortable and long lasting socks I’ve ever owned.

If you could prepare and present a 5000 word assessment of the pros and cons ASAP that would be lovely

In the past 2 weeks - new printer (30kg was fun dragging upstairs); new router (free from Virgin when the old one died); mesh WiFi system (finally decent coverage in the temporary home office); Google Chromecast.

So how is it to actually sit in?

Currently building a new gaming PC, so have just started buying parts. CPU Cooler (Noctua UH12 chromx black) and samsung m.2 drive should turn up soon

Virtual rather than physical text, but a few days back I picked up Affinity Photo because it’s 50% off and therefore seemed to be an excellent Photoshop alternative at the price, especially as it’s a one-off purchase rather than a subscription (CC refusenik, that’s me).

I had a Chromecast tucked away that I’d never really used until furlough/lockdown hit. Honestly it’s saved my sanity! By far the easiest way for me to get Netflix/Disney+ onto my TV and I also had no idea there was so much content on YouTube I’d want to play on the big screen!

Ok since a few people have asked - Pros and cons of my secret lab chair so far…

Pros

  • Having a high back and neck pillow is great for neck and shoulder support.
  • The back tilts pretty much horizontal so I sometimes chill out like this and have a good stretch while things are uploading on my PC. It feels super sturdy too, so it won’t move or tip over.
  • It feels and looks top quality so I’ve no doubt that it’s going to last a long time
  • Adjustable armrests that can be moved in 4 different directions so you can get it just right.
  • Built in lumbar support is nice
  • 5 year warranty if anything goes wrong
  • Really easy to assemble. The toolkit it comes with and even the packaging is all top quality. You even get foam to place on the floor to build the chair on.
  • Because I can adjust it all to my liking, I now sit proper and I don’t end up with any back or neck pain after a long day. I found that in my old chair I’d fidget too much and sit on one leg and stuff. Now I know it’s because it wasn’t supportive enough.

Cons

  • It feels quite firm. From Googling it is supposed to ease up just a little after being broken in but not a lot. Fingers crossed it does. I do like quite firm-ish chairs as it helps with posture but this quite hard.
  • The plastic levers under the seat for tilt and height keep falling off on mine. They just slot on over the metal bar. I think I need to contact them.
  • Not a huge con, but you have to assemble it yourself which takes around 30 minutes.
  • You can turn the armrests in towards you or out away from you. I liked the look of this in the video but they just have the one fixed position for each way and I can’t see how this would suit anyone so it’s pretty useless.
  • It would be nice to have some sort of padding in the armrests

Overall though I’m super happy and it’s a classic example of ‘you get what you pay for’. I just can’t wait to get the rest of the room sorted now so it is complemented even further.

Has anyone built their own desk before?

I was googling and found that you can buy metal frames, so I was thinking of just getting a big slab of some really nice, natural reclaimed wood and just sitting it on top. This way I can have it the perfect length.

I don’t know where to start though  and I’d need someone to cut it all and possibly glue peices together if I went down the scaffold board route for example.

Some types of reclaimed wood look a bit too uneven for a desk to be practical as well, so it might not work
