Probably of interest to you too is that they’re currently installing a ton of new rapid chargers ![]()
I noticed that. I haven’t had to charge there in a few years, but it is always nice to have more options!
I think there are still general account fees for having a merchant account with AmEx that are somewhat based on the turnover or something, not 100% sure but my old boss hated taking it.
IMO tap with it first and then say you got the wrong card if it did decline. Sometimes they’re just saying it’s not accepted.
There’s travel that doesn’t accept AmEx? I think at the very least, I’ve never met an airline that doesn’t accept it. Maybe Ryanair/Easyjet?
Are you doing enough to request customised rates? Base rates should be same across all.

And
https://stripe.com/gb/pricing are the relevant pages for this, implies that unless it’s an EU card, should be same as others.
KFC doesn’t. At least I’ve never had it work anywhere across London/Bristol/Cheltenham.
Not talking flights, more talking about hotels/taxis/etc.
Was going to reply the same, I manage credit card fees and AmEx absolutely costs a lot more, regardless of who the PSP is.
I have posted Stripe’s own pricing URL that you can check - unless you’ve got customised pricing for Stripe merchants it shouldn’t make a difference to my knowledge. I am curious to know if you can share anything to further my understanding of this though?
A few pub owners I know take Amex and the fees are much higher than Mastercard and Visa. Other places I know don’t take Amex for that reason.
TLDR: if you’re paying one rate, it’s a higher rate!
I should have been clearer. It would depend on whether you’re on a blended rate or IC++.
The former will be higher on average but the same for all cards vs the latter where you’re charged different rates. Customised pricing would be on top of this.
So Amex would be the same price as Visa/MC, but that rate would be more than the regular Visa/MC rate.
Which is better very much depends on your card mix.
Interesting I’ve spoke to a couple of stall holders who I’ve been to a few times who started taking it when they switched over to one of the fintech payment processors and they said they now just pay a flat fee regardless of card type, so I assumed it something all the ‘new’ providers offered.
Just seen this might have been in the last post before mine.
I was also under the impression readers like SumUp charge a flat fee regardless of card network.
There is still a 0.70% markup for American Express on Sumup over regular credit cards or debit cards if you take more than £3000 in payments and go onto the Payments Plus plan
@Orinoco On the contrary I find that Sumup has a dizzying number of fee tiers depending on the card (personal or business, Visa/MC or Amex/Diners/Unionpay, cardholder present or remote pay by link, payment by card or payment via Apple/Google Wallet, etc..). But as @TwiceNightly said, maybe the Sumup structure gets tiered only once you are on Payment Plus plan (I am on it, but free of charge/no monthly fee).

TBH a lot of merchants just say “we don’t accept Amex” even if they do…
I’ve found it better to use Amex on my ApplePay and tap, if it goes through great if not just use my Barclaycard. I’ve recently closed my Amex anyways
Monzo - CA (Salary+Saving), JA (Bills+Life stuff), Flex (Subs/Regular expenses)
Monzo - S&S ISA, Emergency funds
Amex Platinum & Gold - Everyday spend. I want to get rid of these but the line of credit is too high and nice buffer if ever needed.
Sadly since launching the grow tab which asks me constantly to track my pension and can’t be permanently dismissed, and this new area half way down the app with ‘suggestions’ that reappear even when dismissed, the Monzo app has become cluttered and full of adverts, the exact thing I was trying to avoid.
Expensive S&S ISA, low savings rates, constantly being asked to upgrade my current account.
I think time for me to browse this thread to find my next bank account.
Keep dismissing all the things that crop up on the Home Screen and they go away eventually and just hide behind the +
They reappear next time
I had to do it like 10 times and now I never see any.
How intuitive and user friendly!
