Updates on our Community šŸ¤ [Site Maintenance - 15th Aug]

Yes - the community is the membership here and it seems a bit insulting to those members who post regularly but not as frequently to refer to the people who have gone over to Discord as ā€œthe communityā€.

Not going to delete my account here or anything, but if the conversation is over on Discord, which right now it is, then that’s where I’ll be.

If it comes back here, so will I. I hope we don’t end up with a divide between the two.

This thread is making me chuckle because a change to this forum can make a bunch of people go anti (e.g., removing themselves from the forum, etc.). It’s like the world’s ending! :joy:

(Maybe as I’m not a regular poster I don’t see the big issue with the changes…)

I have no issue with the imposed changes to the forum.
I have no issue with people leaving in numbers to start another community.

It will however, cause dilution and there will be an unavoidable us-and-them feel at some point. It’s happened before. And maybe, just maybe, by staying put but voicing massive dissaproval to the changes, the users who left may have helped sort things out here.

Which will be a shame. Because it really shouldn’t have this feel.

Real talk: I haven’t banked with Monzo properly since 2020. I stopped using them completely around this time apart from brief dalliance in 2023 for a whole day.

But I still come here. That’s because I quite enjoy the range of topics. I don’t regret starting the thread that might’ve accidentally started this journey - getting frustrated at the increasingly overzealous use of the content filter, but I would regret it that causes this place to close.

I think it will change, and that’s not bad thing. Monzo is first and foremost a business which has legal obligations, it’s not setup by a fanboy in their mums bedroom.

My hope is that we don’t really lose the sense of community that I feel coming here. Fellow banking nerds that may, or not, bank with Monzo.

So I won’t be deleting this account and intend to keep using it. Hopefully that can continue.

Oh! Sad to see DM’s go, had some nice conversations over the years. Seems drastic, hope this’ll come back.

I don’t mind DMs. I find the content filter extremely annoying. Generally, I don’t have a strong opinion on all the issues being raised. I actually think the team have done a good job over the years of maintaining a respectable community feel, which isn’t easy given the variety of people posting.

I also frankly don’t give two hoots about banking anymore either. I just come to chat. So, be it discord or this forum or whatever I’m okay with it.

You can take my DMs but you’ll never silence my rudeness :raised_fist:

I am going to stay put as i can live with the changes. Shame losing DM, seems a bit OT with the word filter.

I’m on both, the changes don’t effect me my use - sure they’re a little silly right now in terms of censorship but that’s going to be an evolving thing.

TBH I’m amazed/surprised this community is still going. I remember when Starling used to have a community forum which they closed down way back in 2018 after they realised that it was probably more hassle than it was worth. I also recall a separate general ā€œfintechtalkā€ community which a number of people jumped to once the Starling one closed but that went offline a couple of years later

For anyone else that can’t stand Discord I’ll point out there’s also a Monzo subreddit (not that I’m a big fan of Reddit either).

It would be a shame but I feel its approaching a point where the Discourse will ultimately be shuttered.

Rarely see any posts in the ideas section and I feel like that’s what this Discourse was really good for back in the day.

The innovation seems to have slowed down as other banks have caught up or surpassed, even the high street banks!

That’s nothing against Monzo, but the main use for this now is just general topic discussions and responding to press releases/product announcements - but does the feedback they get on those really warranting the expensive every year? Probably not :man_shrugging:

Can’t imagine it’s a huge cost, one man running the show, the other monzo staff just hop on to chat or join in.

Well, I meant mainly in terms of the 500 smackaroons a month they pay (minimum) - sure its not a lot in the grand scheme of things but if its a worthless expense then I’d cut it off if it was me

A multi million Ā£ business, it’s spare change.

Might send them my monzo(dot)me link every month

That was in the days of small fry startup land where it likely made sense to focus on here and the free UX research that came with it.

I think personally it’s right that as Monzo has scaled so has how it interacts around new product research, info and launches. Rough guess but I’d imagine even before the ā€œmoveā€ this place represents <0.5% of customers.
