Unlock your app with biometrics

Anyone else had this just pop up?

No, because I already open my app with biometrics :person_shrugging: (android)

Assuming this is Monzo.

Iā€™ve not had anything (iOS app).

I wasnā€™t aware we could lock the app if Iā€™m honest, Iā€™ve never cared to check, but the fact that it will be turned on for me by 4th Febā€¦?

This is Android btw.

Not had this screen warning of a ā€œforced biometric unlockā€, but I have had to use biometrics a couple of days today when doing certain actions that didnā€™t used to ask before. Things like simply viewing my transaction history for my joint account and looking at scheduled payments.

I havenā€™t had this and I donā€™t want it either. Iā€™m happy that I can open Monzo and see my balances without any sort of lock.

At least it will put an end to the recurring arguments about needing an app PIN.

I can for sure, see some people having a problem with this

However, I can also see it from a normal personā€™s perspective, You hand your phone to your friend they can just access your bank app, While, thatā€™s not really a big deal As they canā€™t transfer or set up a payee Without authorisation, I think itā€™s a good thing that itā€™s going to force biometric use

I mean, if youā€™re touching the screen to open the app anyway, you may as well just move your finger the 2 mm to touch the fingerprint reader

Itā€™s how Iā€™ve been using my app for months, if not years :man_shrugging:

I use my toe for biometric authentication

If it still falls back to device passcode, then nah. Itā€™s pointless security theatre in that execution.

So the arguments should and will continue if they havenā€™t implemented this properly. Because itā€™s the nature of the fallback that is the crux of the issue, not that it isnā€™t forced. But folks arguing against it keep missing that point.

If this forced authentication falls back to device passcode, then itā€™s a solution neither side of the argument actually wants. It doesnā€™t fix or improve anything. It just creates the illusion of better security.

Been using biometrics for ages on the Monzo app (Android).

Me too. And if you donā€™t like it, simply turn it off.

Which I have, but I think this topic is highlighting that soon turning it off wonā€™t be an option.

The OP screenshot doesnā€™t confirm (or mention) this. The rest is speculation.

I wouldnā€™t mind enabling this myself, but unlike other banking apps that all have default biometrics to login, there is no wait period before asking again. So if you switch between apps it keeps asking for biometrics everytime you switch back - should be a cooldown imo

The screenshot says

If you choose not to turn it on now, weā€™ll turn it on for you by 4 February 2025.

It clearly states that. And it also clearly does not state that you cannot turn it off after the ā€˜auto-deadlineā€™

Personally, I think it should be used and itā€™s no big deal just stretching the old digit to log in. However, I respect those that find it a chore and prefer it to be off. Each to their own. On 5.2.2025 we can see if there is the option to turn it off.
