I tried to use my card to withdraw cash at a UK ATM last night.
This was a Tesco ATM run by NatWest and advertising free cash withdrawals. I’ve been using this atm for 10 years and have never been charged for a withdrawal.
The transaction was declined due to insufficient funds and on checking the app see there was a fee of £2.70 added. No warning on the screen that either of the banks would be adding a charge.
I don’t believe that Monzo charges for uk cash withdrawals and if they did would be obliged to pre warn me so this feel like a technical issue.
can anyone shed any light on why this might have happened?
Thanks for the reply! I wasn’t aware I that this applied in the UK as well as EU.
Should this not be something that is shown upfront when making the transaction? It’s a bit naughty taking the 3% without any pre warning. If I had sufficient funds I probably wouldn’t have noticed.
An ATM can (and I think must, by law) warn you on screen about charges the ATM provider will charge, but I don’t think it has any way of knowing what, if any, charges your own bank will apply.
I have seen some ATMs show a generic warning like “your bank may charge you for this transaction”, but I think it’s based on some generic criteria like if the ATM thinks you’re using a foreign card (like Revolut), and it’s not based on any data the ATM receives from your bank.
Yes I meant as the transaction was being processed I’m pretty sure I’ve been informed of extra fees and asked to approved them in the past but as the other users has intimated this was probably by the atm supplier rather than the bank.
