Haven’t personally watched live TV in a good few years. I pay for Netflix (which I use the most) and Amazon Prime.
I refuse to interact with Capita/TVL for various reasons, so continue to receive letters addressed to “The Occupier”. I try to do my bit for the environment by recycling these
Even if you tell them you don’t own a tv they keep harassing you anyway. I’ve informed them repeatedly that I Do Not require a licence but they keep sending threatening letters anyway.
I have a deep hatred of tvl for this reason and consider this intimidation
This is exactly why we need a better system where channels requiring a license would be encrypted so this bullshit “enforcement” would no longer be necessary as you wouldn’t be able to watch channels requiring a license without the proper key/smartcard.
If they ever did exist, they probably would have picked up the IF (intermediate frequency) back scatter from old TVs. A modern TV is basically a digital down converter with a monitor attached. No IF to pickup.
Someone will probably mention Tempest, but I really don’t think the spooks would give this technology to capita to abuse.
They put out stories but it is interesting to note that they never prosecuted anyone with evidence supplied by one. They pretty much always prosecute based on the householder’s admission under caution.
My uncle was a half spook - he worked for the GPO and disappeared each day to a remote listening station in the wilds of Lincolnshire to be called up to triangulate ‘interesting’ radio signals. Whenever I asked about TV detector vans, he’d just smile.
I mean to eventually get around to sending them a letter and revoking the implied right of access (which would result in any further visits being considered trespassing) but in the meantime I’m happy to tell them I’m not interested in what they’re selling door to door.
That’s an interesting dilemma - I read that they tend to focus on those who revoke implied access as it is a typical ploy used by actual evaders.
I intend to just ignore them.
Actually I think they do a reasonable job, but that’s because I tend to the left of centre and so my politics generally align with theirs. Having said that, I don’t watch broadcast telly so I’m not paying for it.
But the enforcement is right out of the car clampers cowboy bully boy manual and I’ll enjoy wasting as much of their time as I can.
I do hope that they explain the caution in simple terms and check that the householder/interviewee/suspect understands it before they proceed. They should ensure that the person knows they have a right to free and independent legal advice. I do hope they also arrange for an appropriate adult before they interview anyone with vulnerabilities.
Someone is home on most workdays at my house. Been ignoring those letters for years and no one has ever turned up although I hear of people who have met them
