Transfers / Bill payments and Monzo dates

Quick (ish) question for those who either don’t use Monzo as their main account, or do and have bill payments or scheduled payments.

My main account is Nationwide. Let’s say I get paid on 20th of each month. But I have scheduled payments in Monzo for Flex, ISA and other pots. Let’s say I need £1,000.

How would you schedule this from another bank?

I’m currently looking at setting up a standing order from Nationwide to send £1,000 to my Monzo a day after on the 21st. This is because I don’t know when my wages go into Nationwide, so I don’t want to send it the same day in case it causes issues? Which I think it would?

So I’ve set the payments FROM Monzo main account to pay the Flex and also scheduled payments from Monzo into the ISA on the 22nd.

Am I overthinking this? Or could I do it all on the same day rather than staggering it over 3 separate days?

I’d set everything to 1st of the month if your payday isn’t fixed.

Pay day is 20th of the month (and can’t be changed) and I’d rather pay everything asap so it’s out the way.

I should have said: my main bills is a separate account so that is set aside (hopefully will be Monzo in the future) but I don’t need to worry about that account.

My main concern is getting money across from Nationwide to Monzo on or after 20th so that Flex can take from main Monzo account and I’ve set up Monzo main account as scheduled payment to Monzo ISA.

I was just wondering about timings. I’m being cautious as I’d want to make sure the money comes from Nationwide and is available in Monzo main before going out to Flex and ISA.

Or, if I set it so Monzo paid Flex on 21st, would this be enough time?

Essentially the money from Nationwide would be in Monzo at some point on 21st. It arrives in my Nationwide on 20th but I don’t want to set it to go to Monzo on 20th because it might try at midnight and wages not in until later?

When is your flex payment due?

I changed it to 22nd so it’s 2 days after my pa day into Nationwide and allows time to transfer from NW to M.

If you’re not using Monzo as your main account, then I would say you have 2 options:

First would be keep it fully automated, and stagger it:
Day 0 - Payday
Day 1 - Transfer to Monzo
Day 2 - Pot transfers

This would give you time to make sure you can manually intervene if something goes wrong (not that it will, but “just in case”)

Option 2: Would be to either automate the transfer to Monzo, staggered the day after payday, OR manually send it over.
Then, once the money is in Monzo, use salary sorter to sort the payments into the pots. This would probably work better if you manually transfer the money to Monzo first, as you will already be using your phone.

Personally, I would go with Option 1: Stagger and Automate.

21st should be fine, earliest you’d be paid is 18th, and latest a standing order could be made is 22nd (given weekends).

If the three days system is working well for you at the moment, just leave it as it is and stop worrying.

Hey peeps,

little advice needed regarding the “sort salary”. I opened a pot for my bills and know once my salary hits the account I can set an amount to move to the pot/s.

My question is do I have to confirm this every 4weeks when I get paid or will it automatically move over without me click bating - because if I have to click bate I may as well set up a recurring standing order every 4 weeks

thanks :folded_hands:t4:

There were talks about it being automated but for now it’s manually every time the salary hits, either auto or paid early.

I wish paid early was automated, or optional to be automated.

Thank you C!

yeah I wish it was too so I didn’t have to click watch and then swipe the money note into the wallet :money_with_wings:

I’ve noticed Monzo have also changed the set fixed option of flex repayments split. Used to say pay full on 1st, split into 3 months or split longer with interest. The split into 3 months isn’t fixed as an automatic option anymore so again have to manually click on each payment I make to select pay in 3. (Altho you can set it to auto pay on 1st but that’s for the full balance) :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Hmm I’ve not seen this yet but I also don’t have salary going into Monzo … yet!

Be useful to know whether this is also done on AMOUNT £ or %. For me, % would work better as one month I could be normal salary and the month after have several thousand more. But I’d also like to make sure set amounts were covered - for example mortgage is set etc. I guess that would simply be a scheduled payment.

For the remainder, I’d probably want % of it into various pots incl savings pots.

Automating Salary Sorter could be useful, but not something I would use personally. I have several weekly outgoing but get paid monthly, so the amount I need to transfer into “bills” will change each month, depending on if there are 4 or 5 Mondays before the next pay day.

It’s amounts not %. I think Starling is the only one this far that allows you to enter a %.
