There was no belittling of anyone in my response. It was a matter of fact response. The poster is asking me to justify why a running balance helps budgeting and I have explained why it helps me budget.
Despite this, he is trolling me and you have removed my post.
This place sure has become quite draconian and you are quick to remove the posts of anyone who does not eulogise Monzo.
As already stated, the question was around âhistoric balancesâ so you missed that in your response.
On your more personal note, if the comment isnât aimed at you then why respond? And I havenât touched your post so if you are going to make accusations, at least be sure youâre accurate!
Accusations of trolling can definitely be avoided though please. A little more sensitivity in posting and a little less in responding would be good guidance across the board.
I have said that a running balance is a basic of accounting and banking. I have long asked for this to be included, as have others.
It should not be for me to continually justify why I find it useful and hounded to give an answer.
I find it useful and that is my view. You may disagree with my view, but it should be accepted that it is my view.

Itâs forum, though. If someone says they want something, or donât want something, somebody might ask why so that they can better understand. If you donât want to answer, you really donât have to.
Iâm not disagreeing with anything youâve said. I was trying to understand if the way you would use the running balance would also be beneficial to me, in case I was missing something as I have not, to date, ever looked back at a historic balance and was simply trying to learn and improve my financial behaviours.
Apologies if it came across as dismissive in any way, was not intended that way, nor was I attempting to troll you.
I really miss the running sum, because when Iâm looking through my transactions trying to work out why I have more/less money than I think I should have, it just doesnât click in my thick head unless the running balance is there showing the impact of each individual transaction.
I need a historic balance for reconciliation between accounts. I also actively used the historical graph to track our monthly spending.
Itâs really up to Monzo how they want to play it. Perhaps I donât need it in the long run. But then: what do I need Monzo for?
The reasons I use Monzo:
It was easy to get the bank account in the first place and decent security model. (Easy to use)
Instant notification of transactions [partially works - doesnât work properly for joint accounts]
Great information for merchants. [way way better than normal banks] Categorisation is minimally useful.
API to extract my data for my own uses.
The app itself otherwise isnât that great for much beyond the above. There isnât a web interface which is a big gap â Monzo is a spending card still. Instant reconciliation is a must for contactless.
That is a good question. While Iâd love to say âfully featuredâ, i.e., equivalent functionality of the app, the truth is that a lot of features are just not needed in a web that fit very nicely in the app.
Example:
I just spent twenty minutes reconciling my Monzo account with my own account history. The only way to download and look at statements (lack of balance) was on the phone clicking through PDFs. Thatâs a bit frustrating considering I have a much bigger screen that I could be using. Legacy banks almost make this easier than Monzo as I can get PDFs from their website.
Doing transfers for larger payments to other organisations Iâm paranoid about checking, double-checking, etc the account numbers. Iâm used to doing it all on one computer using the web (get the email with details, double-check, login to bank account, enter or copy/past, double-check again), while with Monzo I canât. I need to transcribe it all on to a little screen.
So:
Phone app is great for on-the-go doing bits and pieces of banking. It is like a replacement for a wallet.
Website is for real organisational work with the bank account, reviewing past activity, verifying and sending larger payments, perhaps in-system email/customer support (phone is awkward if you have a computer!). Mobile-first (and some mobile-exclusive) okay, but mobile-only I still struggle with.
Ahh ok, if you need those too then as you said theyâre not available
It is starting to sound like youâre wanting most of the features from the app, especially with those last bullet points. Since weâre going off topic here Iâll just point you in the direction of the below topic to cast your vote
Hi, in the next app update can you please give the option to chose a graph that suits the user. To analyse the money data in your account however you like. I way prefer the horizontal graphâŠ
I like Monzo as it was clear and easy to see a running money total and history of days when you went in to your overdraft etc. - Quick and accurate balance updates.
I think the big banks like to create balance update delays that push the forgetful towards overdraft fees, is just my view⊠Buy petrol on Friday and you donât see it taken out of account until Monday⊠etc. Thatâs why I donât like the big banks. I hope you donât move in that direction.
Yes you can but itâs not good that there is no running balance. Iâve a lot of DDs and by the time the money has transferred from the pot for each one, itâs not that easy to track the sums of money. There are plenty of banking apps that display a running total. I suspect some of the difficulty lies in the way that pots work as you donât actually have more than one account.
I also would like that feature to be back.
For tracking purposes I like to see how my balance was changing at the tip of a finger: load the app, move up and down. (Android user)
I need the number, not a graph - for my use this is secondary, Coll but not essential.
Before Monzo I was using a budget app with an envelop system. The pots and budgeting features in Monzo replaced that and saved me the time I was wasting on that. It is highly appreciated.
To come back on the missing balance information for each transaction, I also use it to know at the end of the month how much I really did not use or used in order to top up my pots. The budget display does not help as it is a budget spending not the real balancing - it is altered by âexceptionalâ spendings that I have refunded from pots.
A good example is this October.
I had an exceptional spending: I bought a new phone. This month I was abroad for work and didnât use much my Monzo. I partly topped up my account for the phone but not fully. An other exception happened, my salary arrived today instead of the 1st. (My budgeting starts the first). I wanted to know my balance before my salary arrived (the salary sorter transactions) to top up my pots with the unspent money of October.
Having to download a bank transfer to do that is a hassle and letâs be honest I wonât do it. I am missing an essential feature which made me used Monzo instead of my previous bank + a budgeting app.

Fair enough. I think itâll come back (personal opinion) at some time.
