The Monzo Community Plays... Among Us!

*On mobile. You have to pay for it on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and PC

**Among Us is available on Xbox Gamepass Ultimate

Sorry for being pedantic

TIL!

Though now you mention it, I do remember playing something like £3 for the switch version.

I think it plays best on mobile and PC though. You have an actual keyboard to type instead of relying on the chat wheel. I always play on my iPad.

I see XqC. I don’t click XqC

Can I play as Claudia?!

Would be up for some semi casual gaming. Similarly Board Game Arena for the boardgame inclined too.

Well that’s a pleasant surprise! We have more than enough folks interested to try to get a session arranged! Awesome!

Now let’s see if we can synchronise availability to play! These polls are multiple choice, please select every option that could work for you. Please only vote on these polls if you do want to take part though.

But first things first:

Is everyone good with Among Us for our first play session?
  • Yes
  • I’d prefer something else (tell us what below)
0 voters

If more folks would prefer something else, we can poll that out later, but I’m hoping if this works well, we can get around to other games in time anyway.

Now to synchronise our calendars!

What days are you likely to have some free time to play?
  • Monday
  • Tuesday
  • Wednesday
  • Thursday
  • Friday
  • Saturday
  • Sunday
0 voters
And at what times are you likely to be free in the evenings? (UK time)
  • 3pm - 4pm
  • 4pm - 5pm
  • 6pm - 7pm
  • 7pm - 8pm
  • 8pm - 9pm
  • 9pm - 10pm
  • 10pm - 11pm
  • 11pm - 12am
0 voters

I’ve limited it to evenings (so we don’t have 24 options) because I suspect that’s most likely to be the time of day most of us will have free. But if I’m totally wrong and different times of day would work better for you, let me know below and I’ll make some tweaks (by way of additional polls for other times of day).

Thanks everyone!

I can make myself free on an evening!

I might have to blame my absence on you, but I can be there

Hey folks!

So far it’s looking like Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays are the best days for most folks, with Wednesday looking like a decent alternative to involve everyone who wants to play.

It’s also looking like 7pm to 9pm covers most folks, with 6pm to 7pm covering everyone else.

I’m thinking the best way to include everyone is to run two sessions. An earlier one from 6pm on a Wednesday, and then a later one from a 7pm on Friday, and folks who are available for both can join either or both sessions if they wish.

I’ll wait a couple more days to give a few more folks chance to share their availability in the polls above, and then I’ll run some RSVP polls for two sessions (probably next week).

Hey everyone!

We’ll go ahead with planned sessions for those two dates and times. This should cover everyone who has shared their availability so far.

Please vote join on the session you want to play. If you want to join both, vote on both. In order to ensure a fun session, I think we’ll need a minimum of 6 players for a session to go ahead. The max we can have per group is 15.

Which session(s) do you want to join?

Wednesday, January 15th, 6pm
  • Join
0 voters
Friday, January 17th, 7pm
  • Join
0 voters

Ideally, each session will run for at about an hour, or beyond if enough folks want to keep playing.

On the day, I’ll open the lobby about 5 minutes before and share the lobby code in this thread so folks can join. If you didn’t RSVP by voting on the polls but happen to be free at the time, feel free to join in too if there’s space for that session.

Thanks everyone! I can’t wait to sabotage and murder you all! :smiling_imp:

Only 3 of us have voted to join a session so far, so just bumping the the thread in case folks missed them on Wednesday!

I will vote now and try and make Wednesday. Never played among us though.

Hey folks! Final bump for tomorrow’s scheduled game! We need at least one (possibly two) more to go ahead.

Polls to take part a few posts up.

Hey! I’ll try to join tomorrow, but it’s a hella busy Wednesday this week before I go away, and Friday this week I’m off down to London unfortunately so can’t do Fridays :sob:

You’re more than welcome to visit London - it’s a free world, and I believe you are both free & able to move around as you please and not being held hostage! :stuck_out_tongue:

Hey folks! Good news! We have enough people (6 + possibly Michael) to go ahead with today’s session! On my cake day no less!

Today’s session will take place at 6pm this evening (1 and a half hours from now)! I will open the room about 5 to 10 minutes before and share the room code here, so if you didn’t vote on the poll, happen to be free, and want to play with us, you can!

For now, here’s some optional recon for the game we’ll play, so you’re well-equipped to hunt the imposter (or get away with murder):

The map:

The Skeld

Both sessions (if we have another on Friday) will be played exclusively on this map. It’s the most beginner-friendly, and should provide the most fun for all of us. It’s worth taking some time to familiarise yourself with the various room names. They’ll be handy when you stumble across a murdered crewmate so you can tell the rest of us where it was as we try to work out who the imposter might be.

It’s a very easy game to pick up, but before we play, if you haven’t already, it might be worth viewing the in-game how to play instructions (Play > How to play > Classic) and trying the practice mode (Play > Practice > The Skeld) to get a feel for the controls, explore the map, and how to do the various tasks were given as crewmates.

It may be helpful to read the beginner’s guide too!

Game settings:

The game settings are optimised to strike a good balance between being beginner-friendly, fun, and keeping the rounds varied and interesting.

Player settings:

  • Player speed: 1.25x (how fast we walk. I think this is the Goldilocks speed between too slow and too fast).

Meetings:

  • Emergency meetings: 1 (If you see something suspicious that is not a dead body, or you think the imposter is chasing you down, run to the cafeteria and hit the emergency button to let us know! We can only do this once as a group, so use it wisely.)
  • Discussion time: 45 seconds (how much time we have to discuss before we can vote out who we think the imposter is).
  • Voting time: 45 seconds (to keep bickering over who the imposter is a little longer and cast our votes).
  • Anonymous votes: off (so we can see who each of us votes for).
  • Confirm ejects: on (so we can see if the person we voted off is in fact the imposter or not).

Tasks:

  • Task Bar updates: meetings (so inexperienced imposters aren’t too disadvantaged trying to fake tasks for the first time).
  • Common tasks: 1 (everyone on the crew will have to complete this task).
  • Short tasks: 2
  • Long tasks: 1
  • Visual tasks: off (these can make it a little too hard for an imposter, particularly a novice one, so having them off should result in a more balanced game).

Imposters

Imposters are randomly chosen each round. I’ll scale the number of imposters according to crew size. If fewer than 8 of us play, we’ll have 1 imposter. Between 8 and 11, we’ll have 2 imposters, and 3 imposters for 12 or more.

Imposter roles:

  • 1 Shapeshifter: 30% chance (Shapeshifters can turn into any crew member of their choice for up to 30 seconds. Handy for framing an innocent crew member for a murder, just make sure you transform whilst out of sight).
  • 1 Phantom: 30% chance (Phantoms can turn invisible for up to 30 seconds. Handy for getting away with murder or sneaking around the map undetected).

Imposter settings:

  • Kill cooldown: 30 seconds (how frequently you can kill someone).
  • Vision: 1.5x (how far you can see).
  • Kill distance: medium (how far away from another player you can be in order to kill them).

Imposters can use vents to hide and quickly travel to other rooms. Just make sure no one spots you doing this. Imposters can sabotage to make their job of eliminating the crew easier and prevent them from completing tasks efficiently. Your goal as an imposter is to eliminate crew mates without being caught and before they can finish their tasks.

Crewmates

Crewmate roles:

  • 1 engineer: 50% chance (Engineers can use vents just like Imposters. Handy for catching imposters in the act or denying their access to a vent. But be careful, because other crewmates might mistake you for an imposter!)
  • 1 guardian angel: 50% chance (The first crewmate to be killed has a chance to become a guardian angel. They can protect one crewmate from murder temporarily if you suspect an imposter is about to strike.)
  • 1 noisemaker: 50% chance (If you die, you’ll alert the whole crew to the location of your corpse, which could foil an imposter’s plan).
I’ve opted for only these roles because they’re mechanically simple and can add some fun and varied dynamics to each game. Scientists and trackers are a bit more involved in terms of gameplay.

Crewmate settings:

  • Crewmate vision: 0.75%

Crewmates have to wander about the map, completing their tasks, whilst keeping a watchful eye out for suspicious imposter behaviour and reporting any dead bodies. We have to complete all our tasks or catch the imposter(s) before they kill us all.

We can always tweak any of these settings as we play to fit the group better, so they’re not set in stone and just serve as a beginner-friendly starting point. I’ll be back here just before 6 with the room code.

Good luck, play nice, and have fun!

Is it possible to watch externally?

Not unless someone wants to stream it!

Does the game run even with 5 people? I’ll do my best to join, but some last minute work needs tying up… later slots generally tend to work better for me in case something like this happens. Wouldn’t want to spoil the fun for others.

Also – can one join on any device that runs the game?

Yep, the game can technically run with a minimum of 4 players, I just find it tends to play better once we get to a group size of at least 6.

You can join on any device on any platform that the game is available on.

It’ll be best on a phone, tablet, or pc for the discussions though.

Someone stream it to YouTube or twitch so I can sit and have a laugh please.

Are you all going in a discord or such?
