The Great Holiday Topic 🏖️

Hi all, have a quick question and wondered if anyone here had similar experience

Earlier last year on Jun 28, me and two friends had WizzAir flight W95725 from LGW to Malaga delayed by about 6 hours, it was caused by an issue another plane had on the runway

My friend attempted to claim by using some random third party company that he found online, I thought of it as more of a “give it a go, whatever” kind of thing because I didn’t realise we were legally entitled to anything

I met some people in Poland who actually explained the law and that they had ÂŁ350 payouts multiple times from WizzAir - the company that friend used to claim say they are still trying, wizzair says we have an existing claim if I try to submit the form online

It’s been over 6 months - am I right to think that they might have pocketed the money?

Wizz should be able to let you know the status, or put in a DSAR specifically referring to those details.

Always go the airline for delays, never a random company online - but that advice is hindsight.

Where abouts in Tunisia did you go?

I’m going all inclusive to Tunisia next week - my most important question right now is: did you find any ATMs that don’t charge?

You are not entitled to compensation.

The issue on that day was because another plane aborted takeoff and blocked the runway.

Compensation under UK/EU 261 is only payable when the delay is within the airline’s control.

How do you know? Is there a way to find out why a plane was delayed? Would be interesting to see sometimes.

If you were eligible, it would take WizzAir eons to make payment anyway. It took repeated chasers and threats of escalation for them to pay compensation when we raised a claim, even after they approved it.

It made the news and I do remember that being the reason that day, a lot of other flights were delayed but ours was the worst

No this is just one of the rare occasions that someone’s come on here and left enough detail to be able to look up what happened.

It’s this:

Wizz do still have a duty of care though, so you should be able to claim food and (non alcoholic) drinks, but you would have needed to have kept receipts.

In fairness to Wizz they emailed us vouchers to purchase food from the stores at Gatwick, first ÂŁ6 each and then when the delay was extended a further ÂŁ8 each

I believe that’s also the law. And at 5 hours they should’ve offered the option of a full refund.

I have mixed feelings about this. I believe the law is ‘reasonable expenses’. I would argue that after a 6 hour delay a food and drink bill of around £30 per head at an airport is perfect reasonable.

As they’re a budget airline I imagine there’s some psychology going on here. If you tried to claim more you might be successful, but by giving vouchers for such low values they’re setting the expectation that everything else has to come out of your own pocket. It’s clever, cheeky and annoying.

I was in Sousse. I only took cash out once at the airport, I don’t remember if I got charged, there’s no charge shown on my Monzo transaction.

One tip I do have - they have a ‘law’ against ‘exporting currency’. This turns out to be an outrageous attempt at legalised theft - at the departing airport they search people (thoroughly in some cases) for any cash and will just take it off you if they find any. Don’t bring any UK cash with you, they’ll take it! A bit outrageous, thankfully someone warned me about it and I managed to hide mine very well.

Be very aware of scammers. The common scam is that they have people who spot you coming out of the hotel. Then when you get to town and get out of your taxi someone approaches, says your hotel name, claims to be an off-duty member of staff who recognises you and offers to ‘show you around’. Just completely ignore them and they go away. Most people were very friendly though!

I’m also going to Sousse, so much appreciate the tips! I was going to take some GBP to withdraw and exchange at the hotel but I shall avoid that now

Wasn’t going to bother going abroad this year but the wife is now insisting. Looking at Tenerife as we have good memories there from the early days but when the hell did it get so expensive? :grimacing:

Same time as everything else.

Canaries aren’t a cheap getaway any more

We are looking for a cheap holiday for April and some of the prices are a lot higher than last year

I know it’s a long time since we last went but the prices have almost doubled. The same hotel in 2015 we paid £800 for 2 of us is now almost £1,500 and the pictures don’t look any different than when we went. Also in 2018 we paid £1,500 and that’s now £2,700.

When we booked Kos for 11 nights 13 months ahead of time it was ÂŁ800 each, all inclusive.

Checked a few months after and it was near double.

It’s madness, baring in mind we are looking at the end of September as well so not exactly peak time.

Totally nuts given that we managed Australia for ÂŁ1800 for two flights and another ÂŁ1000 or so for the two weeks accommodation!
