A SIM card that’s cheap to use there. Most normal ones cost a fortune.

Good point! Any recommendations?

Id point her to the likes of BMEsim etc but she doesn’t have an eSIM device.

Usually for Asia if you can wait and pick one up over there it’s cheaper pence per GB compared to some of the eSIM solutions who charge pounds per GB

I got an unlimited data eSIM for about 18 quid. Will find out tomorrow if it’s works

Decent travel charger ?

Maybe something like this that they can also use back home, might also need some (nice long) type c cables to go with.

personally I’d be a bit wary of using something from a no-name brand on Amazon - something with retractable pins almost certainly won’t meet safety standards (ie there’s a potential electrocution risk) and I’ve watched enough Big Clive videos on YouTube to know that some switched mode power supplies are more of a fire risk than others.

I’ve just bought one of these for my UK travels - if I was going abroad would bring along the appropriate adapter for that country - ie not one with slidey pins.

If you got an iPhone, you can get a Suica, UCOCA or PASMO in the Wallet. It’s a must have in Japan. Cash is still needed for some small things, but many ATMs will not accept foreign cards.

For an eSim, I used Ubigi as they had a good discount at the time. It’s not unlimited but had more than enough data for my trip. In another trip I used Escapesim (an Australian company and price are in AUD) and worked perfectly. Some times getting a regional eSim works out cheaper than a single country eSim.

I use this brand and works perfectly. Can get them on Amazon and some travel shops.

But for my laptop I prefer to change the plug rather than use an adapter. I got the Apple World Travel Adapter Kit and works great.

I have one of these kits and it’s all I carry when I travel now that everything is USB-C.

Anyone have any recommendations for somewhere nice to go for a long weekend in March? It’ll just be me and a very small, very lazy dog (wife and kids will be visiting family in the states for a few weeks). Ideally somewhere I can drive to after work on a Thursday, stay for 3-4 nights, and just relax with a nice view, read some books, do some walks, etc.

Preferences, in order:

  1. Nice view. Can be the sea, or mountains. I’m not bothered as long as I have something nice to look at.
  2. Dog friendly (need to keep the wife’s dog alive) with a reasonably-sized room
  3. Within ~250 miles of Peterborough, mild preference for the North
  4. Pub within walking distance

Alnmouth in Northumberland would be a good shout it’s got a great beach with plenty of walks that you can go on and Alnwick Castle and Gardens isn’t too far away and if you are happy to travel a bit further you can also visit Bamburgh Castle. Coastline is great but weather might still be a bit fresh in March

I will look into that! Thanks!

I’ll second Northumberland (this from a Yorkshireman!). Beautiful coastline, some great beaches, restaurants and pubs.

Recommend a trip to Hexham for a look around the Abbey and the shops. The restaurant and bar at The Beaumont Hotel are dog friendly (rooms are not).

Barter Books in Alnwick is in an old railway station. Great for a rainy day, it’s huge and the waiting room cafes are great.

Pick up a Northumberland parking disc for £1 from local shops, tourist information centres or libraries. It gives a couple of hours free parking in many places.
