Much as I’d not be keen on a bank questioning what people do with their money, this sounds like a time that when what sounds like a vulnerable person wants to lift a heap of cash to send to their grandson, would it have been so difficult for them to call the grandson for some confirmation? Maybe even ask why cash and not a bank transfer?
They can’t confirm it is the grandson on the other end of the call
They could have tried e.g. ask them to confirm their mother’s maiden name or similar.
If you join the Facebook group there are quite a few people who can easily repair them.
You just send the board in and they return it fixed in a few days.
Not reliable enough really to accept the liability of being wrong (by accepting an inadequate check).
For example, I use my mum’s maiden name rather than my dad’s surname.
As your surname?
Mines my dads. We actually have the same first and last ![]()
Yep. There’s a few reasons behind it.
In other general chitchat news, my work has asked for a photo and want to put it along with my qualifications on the local equivalent of Google Reviews… I will be refusing and may update the thread if there are any consequences that are interesting to talk about
Can we see it too and we give you two stars?
No, I don’t think you can even access it without a Chinese phone number.
Furthermore, I won’t be providing said photo etc to them… feels like a total invasion of my privacy to post me on China’s equivalent of Google Reviews just to use me to advertise. My salary isn’t high enough to sacrifice my not posting photos online.
I have had a car insurance renewal quote, and it has doubled. From £551 to £1038.
At the bottom of the email they go on to say,
An increase in premiums is not something we take lightly.
And they say no price matching. Allianz
This is crazy, someone registered a car in Khan’s name and put Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant as the address and now the mayor’s been convicted for not paying tax on it. How did it get this far without anyone questioning it?!
A case for a comprehensive national ID system. ![]()
One we should have had for ages now but for some reason we think we’re right on this when every other non-Anglophone country has one
Just had another unauthorised purchase for Amazon music unlimited on my account, from a Firestick that was in Kids profile.
Can’t wait for next gen Apple devices to come out and make the move. I have had so many of these including one on an echo dot in a room that had no one in.
On all occasions they ask me to turn off One-click purchases (already off), but still the purchases are made.
Why don’t they force them to be completed on the Amazon app or website like what they do for shopping deals they send on Alexa notifications?
Or they could enforce a purchases PIN like what Microsoft does on Xbox. This also prevents accidental purchases.
One time I bought EA FC 25 accidental before I enabled the purchases PIN. That is when I set it up, good thing I was refunded immediately.
We have a passport.
The reason France has it is because the Germans insisted on it. Likewise in a number of the other European countries.
Fortunately, we weren’t conquered by the Germans back then.
What’s your point? They serve two different purposes that sometimes overlaps. We shouldn’t need a passport (a more expensive travel document) to prove our identity within the UK either.
This doesn’t change the case for national identity cards. For the record, we also had them during wartime and for some reason got rid of them afterwards.
Granted, I don’t think they were as useful as they could be today.
Is a physical card even needed? If I’m opening a new bank account for instance I should be able to connect my Gov UK One Login account and choose which data I share with the bank. That should be the overarching identity database.
Also to that point, where are those digital driving licences that we were promised ages ago? We should all have them by now.
This has chronically failed for me. My identity cannot be verified. I used both my foreign and UK passports with no success. I got an error along lines of third party provider (Experian) couldn’t verify me.
How do you verify that? Account from birth with the government seems more dystopian than identity card to me. I also think we then make the Gov UK Digital Wallet the Digital Identity App and integrate both systems.
