TestFlight Release Discussion

The updating spinner is not an improvement at the moment. Previously the app would update very quickly, now it claims to be updating but isn’t. It says last updated 18 hours ago. :slightly_frowning_face:

Strange, I’ve lost my last “last updated” text over the last few days, now i get the spinner at the top if its updating otherwise I have to trust that it’s up to date now.

I miss the Last Updated Text because Monzo has frequently been very laggy at updating and ive noticed it still since the text has gone.

@robinb Please can we have the Last Updated/Updating text back? At least until the app updates more reliably

I’ve noticed as well when the drawer is at the top hiding the big balance a smaller balance appears. When you pull the drawer down it no longer disappears so you have a little balance and a big balance showing. Then if you move the drawer up again the little balance doesn’t show. Somethings gone a bit wrong with it since the updating spinner is at the top.

I think that bug has been about for a while. The logic that makes the small balance display gets supremely confused when you faff about with the drawer.

Ah right. Another one for the Little List

Yes, good spot! We fixed this annoying bug in the latest build and it now uses the same sections as the “Payments” tab

@Dynamo thanks for the feedback on this. Are you on iOS? If so, I think what you’re seeing is unrelated to the updating spinner changes as it sounds like the update is not happening at all. There is a fix in 3.39 that addresses a long-standing issue affecting some people with syncs, would you be able to report back after using that build for a bit?

Thanks, this is on our list of small annoyances to fix

@Addzy If the sync fails for any reason, you should then see a “Last updated” value in the error message. The idea is that either the app is up to date and you shouldn’t need to worry about when the last sync happened, or something went wrong in bringing it up to date in which case we’ll tell you that information. If you feel like you can’t trust it, it would be great to know more details because it’s exactly that lack of trust we’re trying to fix right now. When you say it’s been laggy at updating, does it not show the Updating spinner in these cases, telling you that things are not necessarily up to date?

Always having either “Last Updated:”/“Updating” meant you always knew where you were at. My biggest complaint with Monzo is that on iOS i’ve always found it notoriously buggy on when it updates, i’ve seen it mentioned on the forums many times. People including myself would need to force quit the app or switch to the payments tab and then back again to manually trigger the update.

I don’t seem to always get the spinner now. It seems a little bit more reliable but it’s still not trustworthy enough. Over the last few days I have still had numerous times with no spinner and showing a balance which then updated after a short time.

This isn’t good enough because you need to be able to trust that balance and I just don’t. It’s not an issue I’ve ever had with another bank but whilst the issue shouldn’t happen, when you had the previous text i always felt I knew where i stood and I knew If i had to force an update.

Now I find myself having to try an force update every time i check my balance because Ijust don’t trust it and I’m sure i’m not the only one

Sorry if i waffled on here and kept repeating myself

Odd, I haven’t really seen it mentioned at all (I’m sure there’s a thread or two but it’s not front and centre every day) and I don’t see it myself. If it was a specific app problem then there’s obviously a subset of devices thing going on that’s always going to be a pain to try and track down.

Oh i don’t think its a big problem that people complain about and not sure i’ve seen whole threads on it, just comments on other threads.

It’s never really been a big issue because we had the text that let us know where we stand and if it was up to date or not

I agree , I used to get the text with " last updated however many hours ago" and knew that a payment I had just made wasn’t accounted for and the app was playing up , now you dont know and just have to assume its up to date…why wouldn’t you  …maybe if the spinner is spinning its not up to date would be the logic now ??

Cool, thanks for the detail around this. I fully agree “not knowing where you stand” is a big problem and is actually the reason we’ve made these changes. I do think we are solving this problem, by making sure that if there is a problem with syncing, we always let you know that information. I understand that you haven’t necessarily always been able to trust the balance and feed values in the past, but we have made many improvements here that should mean this doesn’t happen anymore; especially as of 3.39. Please let me know if you do experience a problem though.

I’d also like to clarify that the “Updating…” spinner will only show if updating is taking longer than 2 seconds. The reason is that it’s actually relatively annoying/anxiety-inducing to keep seeing a prominent updating spinner as you navigate around the app. We only want to show it if it’s taking a noticeably long time to update, which we think lies at around 2 seconds. If you don’t see a spinner after doing something, it means your balance & transactions should already be up to date.

So in short, the full reasoning we used to arrive at the current state is as follows:

  • The vast majority of the time the app should already be up to date a split second after doing something (e.g. making a payment).
  • If it’s not up to date, you should start seeing an updating spinner by the time you notice it’s not up to date
  • If the update fails, you should see an error prompt telling you when the last successful update was, and the ability to retry the update.

Seriously so handy! Thanks for fixing

Can we have the same on Android? We just have a long list :slightly_frowning_face:

Not an iOS thing, but the last two or three releases I have found the Android beta app to be very CPU and battery intensive on first logging in - the app gets super “laggy” for a noticeable period of time and it really chewed through my battery %

(I have been switching every day or two between my phone and Chromebook during this lockdown period, so logging in more often than normal, making it noticeable)

THANK YOU! I’ve been banging on about this issue for ages. So glad it is fixed. Just need the ability to add notes to bill splits and then I’m happy
