Starling Feedback

@simonb
Logging in on monzo has parity with most other places (touch id in all legacies now?) and whilst there might be poor ux across parts of all apps - that includes monzo.
Incidentally the entire payee section of monzo is atrocious, far worse then any legacy. None of who abuse/force access to contacts or block access to the entire section if you dont give permission. Barclays offer pingit but they don’t dedicate 95% of the page to it.

Where you excel is real time notifications. It’s hardly a surprise though if you price yourself as a travelcard then people will use it as such!

I’m just saying you need to ask the right questions or at least prioritise them. If you’re success is based around absorbing these costs because people use you as a main current account. Surely the better questions to be spending time on would be “why aren’t people using us as current account/main provider” which could negate “how can we charge for feature X/will people tip”.

Things like “would you tip a bank”, are akin to “if stick my head in a fire, will I get burnt”.

Great, looking forward to having parity to major features of legacies like second accounts (not forcing people into pots), joint accounts, CASS, apple pay, statements, plus redesigning that awful payments tab!

I mean, I disagree based on my experience. Santander’s mobile app looks like it was designed in 1998. Additionally they are appear to have multiple apps and it’s unclear what they differences are or which ones to use for what.

Clearly not, as at least one person in this thread didn’t have an issue with it. We felt it was worth presenting as an option. You clearly disagree, and that’s fine - my point is that we should not be presuming that the seemingly obvious solutions to the problems are the only ones we should present as a potential option.

I definitely agree with that. It’s why I was so keen for Debit Card top ups to return, and why I am keen for them to remain free.

It’s the basic stuff like this that needs to be so smooth, so polished that customers are compelled to switch banks.

It’s one of the first areas I which I found huge problems with Starling back in August. I gave constructive feedback and they’ve done the grand sum of not very much to improve it. Monzo’s implementation isn’t much better.

I recommended Starling look at how FD and RBS do setting up Payees / making paymentsq. Neither perfect in themselves but both much much better than both Starling and Monzo.

Monzo has some fantastic stuff like really time notifications but I really would recommend you all going out and signing up for different legacy Bank apps, seeing how they work and coming up with something that is better.

And for me HSBC’s app was supremely slow and barely function. Their requirement that I must use the secure key as well basically killed all usability for everything

Like i said you’ll find examples of poor everywhere (though Santander doesn’t need access to contacts to even get you on a payments screen and its still far better making a payment then monzo). Do you think monzo payment implementation is good enough?
Put it up against Lloyds, or Barclays and you have to wonder why there wasn’t a bit more time spent on that screen.

Ultimately though it’s monzo’s job to convince its users to handle their payments.

Guess who’s handling mine (hint - it aint monzo).

Another first for Starling:

That actually looks interesting. More interesting than digits receipts from Eat, anyway.

Starling’s latest iOS update has changed the setup a new payee screen.

To be fair to Starling, I’ve found that although a bit clunky doing it via the forum they do actually do it and pretty quickly in my experience. But maybe that because it was me ‘kicking off’ about it that lead to the topic in the first place!

Reporting is only available by iOS in Monzo world and I have a couple of submissions, one going back 2 weeks now that still hasn’t been done.

I signed up for Starling on Wednesday, was accepted on Thursday. A few hours after being accepted I was offered an overdraft, and my card will be sent out on Monday. On Friday my CASS request should be finished.

So far so pretty darn good.

They’ve had an excellent opportunity to examine how their competitors do this and to introduce something better, something that challenges.

They’ve successfully managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by amending it to a variation of a sub-standard process spanning multiple screens (albeit not as many).

And there seems to have been no testing done before rolling it out. Unnecessary password requirement followed by bugs if you enter password incorrectly on the first occasion and correctly on subsequent occasions.

I didn’t think this would be too difficult for Monzo or Starling: look at how your competitors do it and improve on that. Simple, no?

Yes it’s a seamless process.

Monzo and Starling both on a journey so be interesting to see how they develop. They both need to have a rock solid foundation to get the basics right. But it’s good to see feedback like this.

But we can see some innovation in the paying space. We see the likes of Apple Pay Cash where it’s easy to send and receive money via message. So there definitely room to innovated beyond the current screen model and hide the details.

Glad to hear of your positive experience. :grinning:

FD app is rubbish i my opinion! I expected them to at least try and be cutting edge but they been asleep at the wheel and best thing about them is the phone service but having to talk to someone for my banking is not where i want to be

It’s not without its own issues but Monzo and Starling could learn a thing or two about it for setting up and managing payments.

I quite like now it’s got TouchID. Admittedly, before Monzo I hadn’t compared it to anything else.

Setting up payments on starling is far far better.

I’m on android though. Two/three screens.
