It’s not that strange - it’s just another reinforcing that it’s an actual bank account, not “just an app” that you can try out, uninstall & try again a few weeks/months later. You wouldn’t go into HSBC & open an account, only to close it because you didn’t like how it looked after opening it, just to open it again in a few months.
Now in your case, yeah from what you’ve said, there should be an exception, but the reasoning behind the rule is sound when you remember that they want to be seen more as competitors to “real banks”, not so much competition to Fintechs. Same as why they emphasize ‘bank’ in Starling bank as opposed to Monzo/Wise/Revolut who don’t touch the word. It’s just a different market niche.
I think the 12-month ban is in place to prevent people opening credit check-free accounts and CASSing them all over the place. That’s my opinion.
Equally, given that there’s anecdotal evidence of people asking nicely and being allowed back, they need to revisit it and either enforce it for all, or get rid.
Not to mention I think @Carlo1460 has/had a legitimate reason for doing what they did and shouldn’t be punished for it. That said, I’d probably have gone to the FOS with a complaint rather than close. At least at first.
I complained initially about the transactions which was upheld.
I’ve complained again about the closure reopen issue and they tried to call but I missed it, they left voicemail saying they would email me but that was half hour ago and not had anything
They hard search new customers, existing customers just get banned for life from all LBG brands if they take the piss. So they already do, worse than the fintechs.
By the FOS?
I think that can take a while to come through – they likely called to tell you “this is what we’ll say in our response when it comes”
1st time I noticed a problem was last week, when my Spending calculation tab didn’t show all my spendings right. It took around 12 hours to get back to normal.
Yesterday & Today, I noticed bigger problems. My Spending calculation is not counted at all.
I done shopping in 2 supermarkets today and don’t see it reflected not on my circle bar, nor in a main Spending tab.
I am sure my categories are right and info source is chosen as well (as online shopping I do from my Space).
I also made a quick test on my Euro account too just now. Paid €4 through the GPay to my Wise.
Euro Spending tab nor circle bar don’t show this transaction at all.
It’s clearly some Spending calculators don’t work properly.
I did clear catch, re-install my Starting app today. Problem persist.
I agree, I think Starling operate a crowdsourcing model for logos, much like Monzo. They both seem to suffer from a lack of someone properly reviewing the submissions.
In the case of Starling they seem to be showing less and less icons.
My other bug bear with Starling is the size of the images and the space taken up by each transaction line.
It’s been around for years including the option to setup round-ups with a multiplier.
Starling just republish previous patch notes whenever they do any bug fix patches so that it’s slightly different from the usual ‘Nothing to see - just bug fixes’ notes. Not sure if I’m ok with that or not - on the one hand, it means that it does highlight a feature that people may not be aware of, but on the other it makes it harder to actually spot whenever they launch something new.
Absolutely shouldn’t be allowed though. That space is for what the update is - even if it’s just minor fixes. Every update should and is something so you ought to know what you’re putting onto your phone!
