And lots of unsolicited marketing materials.
I am not bothered by it as I am sure everything is paid for. I let them do their job (or appear as doing so) and I get on my way.

Marks & Spencer send you an emailed receipt if youâve scanned their Sparks loyalty card.
So do Ikea.
Donât upset it ![]()

And at the other end of the food shop spectrum - so does Lidl!
Donât these only leave it in the app?
They can detain you, everyone has that right in England and Wales with the reasonable belief of theft occurring. Large stores will have detaining rooms for this purpose (usually this is for compliant detains). Reasonable force can be used if a crime is suspected.
They cannot search you without your consent, that is correct.
If they incorrectly detain you then they do put themselves up for potential legal action but a court will throw that right out if there are actual reasonable beliefs that can be explained.
These are rights every person has in England and Wales, itâs just nobody uses them but security are taught how to do their job within these laws.
A store can require a receipt to be shown if this is a condition of entry, but I canât think of any stores that do require this, but in theory they can do so.
But honestly just donât be that person. Show your receipt, or let them check your shopping. Itâs just them doing their job and if youâve paid for everything itâs 2 mins and youâre on your way.
I would really like a proper digital receipt process, especially as lots of organisations use a receipt print method which means the receipts fade. For anything expensive, I always photograph the receipt and write the details on the back. If you need a refund or fix, a faded receipt is hard work.
In my Sainsburys if you use the self scan you have to scan your receipt to get out of the barriers, my local Tesco doesnât have any barrier you can just walk out
Itâs the same in Primark, here.
We donât have stores like that down here yet.
Not sure how far down you are⌠but this is in High Wycombe
Down in Kent
Fair, I thought you were going to say Cornwall
Yes, which wouldnât be âhe wonât let me search his bagâ. Detaining someone like this also is liable to have the person performing this detaining arrested if they donât have a valid reason to use reasonable force.
I get it, I just donât like the idea that they need to randomly check people to check if theyâre criminals while the reality is actual criminals will just bolt.
They know who is shoplifting from them 99% of the time. The staff arenât thick.
What of the cases where their sensors just go off, or cart wheels getting locked as you walk past the exit?
I have had cases where de-tagged clothing still set alarms off, I let them check and walk off.
Cart wheels going off at the exit would be odd, normally they stop at the edge of premises. If the sensors went off I would submit to the search as I think itâs reasonable.
Someone just looking at you and deciding theyâre going to random search you is too far.
At the Sainsburyâs here they lock as you exit. I have seen people ride them with locked wheel on streets very far away. I also saw a woman offloading one from her Volvo XC90 with shopping in and wondered how she loaded it.
Not sure about your specific Sainsburyâs but the one in my hometown (I think the one in Cheltenham too but I honestly canât remember if I even went to it) let you go as far as the car park covered.
