Starling Bank Chat (Part 2)

I’d much prefer this type of saving, it would be less noticeable.

Does it move it automatically on checking your balance, or do you have to force it to do it?

Yep personal account only, another useless savings feature for those of us who only use Starling joint account

Is there even any interest on this?

Doubt it, looks like a regular space

From what I can tell from the email, and looking creating one of these in the app - it looks like you do it manually.

So, it’s basically just a space (not even a saving space with the higher interest rate) but with a special widget for your phone so you can quickly see your balance in that space.

On the one hand, it’s nice that someone at Starling thought about what can they launch at the New Year to encourage better habits, but without any major software development needed but it is a fairly bare minimum product launch…

But maybe it’s a sign that they still have a product manager or two there thinking about account improvements

Here’s a bit more detail from their blog

So anyone could do this with any bank?

Unless it means widget like iOS widget? I dno. Seems a bit half built.

Yeah - there’s an iOS widget for it.

From the blog post, they kinda make it seem like they’re doing you a favour by making it a manual process because it’s meant to be all about you checking your account daily and spotting what’s come out the previous day and what could have been spent better. The blogger mentions getting a taxi when he could’ve got a bus, he thought he’d bought 3 things ā€˜that we around a tenner each’ but actually cost Ā£46 in total, and an old sub that he’d been meaning to cancel’ in the 2 weeks he’d been doing this.

So, it’s not purely about saving a little, often (like the Monzo Saving Challenge) but about building the habit to check your account every day.

I’ll give it a go - stick the widget on my home screen and see if that does anything, although I do tend to check my account every day anyway.

If I could tap the widget and it moved the pennies to the space, that’d be a way to encourage better behaviours.

I kind of do this already - I have round-ups turned on but sometimes I move money around and end up with an odd few pence in my main balance so I’ll move that over to the same Space as round-ups. I’d prefer an automated daily process that could run at midnight and take the pence (or pounds if that’s that I want) and move that over.

Good to see something new in the app but I don’t think I’ll be using this one

I need the opposite of this, something to stop me checking my bank account balances so often :joy: it’s kinda a fixation…

If only I was allowed back to Starling!

I was going to say that seems pointless. But it’s actually the second digit after the point.

If they just did it automatically every day just before midnight, it might be worthwhile. The most you’re in for is Ā£2.79 a month if my maths are correct so it’s not going to break the bank.

You could also add round ups into the folder, if that’s possible. It would boost it further.

I’ve just seen them pushing this new ā€˜feature’ all over LinkedIn.

If it was genuinely a ā€˜sweep the pennies’ daily feature into a space, that would actually be pretty sweet.

Right now it’s just ā€˜look at your balance and move it yourself’ which feels a bit legacy bank product feature.

It would make sense to just sweep it automatically.

I looked into last digit sweep and it’s not specifically pence, it’s the last digit in your balance.

So for example £1567, £7 would be the last digit and would be moved over.

Or £2345.30, then in theory £0.30p would be moved over.

The aim is to get people to check their balances.

Ooh no, last digit is zero so it shouldn’t move anything :joy:

Is anyone else’s home tab no longer showing spent today & spent this month? They need to change it back :exploding_head:
