Inevitable ??

He took (or appears to have taken) the path he had control of. Respect for that.

And respect for engaging in one of the great thankless tasks in modern sporting history. So much pressure.

Pretty inevitable in my view. The next England match isnā€™t till September so they have plenty of time to offer the job to their first choice, then second choice, then third choice - Hello Mr Klopp, hereā€™s your office.

Itā€™s a pretty thankless job, to be fair: everyone in the world knows how they could do it better than you; the players you have to work with are slightly overrated because in their day job they are playing with some of the best players in the world; and they are being coached by some of the best coaches money can buy.

Southgate has done a good job, considering. Heā€™s either the best England manager ever, or second best (depending on how highly you rate winning something).

As an outsider, I think he done a great job with the English national team.

Two Euro finals in a row. Wildly impressive.

The pressure from the media is ridiculous.

Iā€™m fairly sure the FA were very keen for him to stay on.

I have mixed feelings. Heā€™s a great human being and has left the team in an infinitely better place than when he took over.

But heā€™s also been gifted with multiple incredibly fortunate tournament draws and in each case England have ultimately fallen against the first ā€œbigā€ team theyā€™ve come up against.

On Sunday they lost to a markedly better team, but three years ago they really should have beaten Italy at home :person_shrugging:
