Shared pots or virtual cards for users to split expenses without manually adding to a running split

Problem - there isn’t automatic or pre agreed method to share everyday spending that doesn’t rely on both people being financially connected.

Context - the best way of splitting bills relies on each user remembering to add shared expenses to a running split. This becomes an issue when you forget to add expenses, and annoying when doing it over a long period. The alternative is to open a joint account that both parties contribute to and pay from. A perfectly fine solution for many partners but there are many use cases where opening a joint account (and tying financial records) isn’t preferable.

How users solving the problem - seen on reddit, some users have been adding their virtual card to their partners apple/google wallet (which isn’t allowed) and connecting that card to a spending pot. Cino allows for preset bill split ratios, and HyperJar allows for shared pots where each user has their own connected virtual card.

If you want to penny pinch and add every transaction to a split, and you forget, then that’s the life you chose.

Otherwise, just relax a bit. You have a work-around above, whether you want to give that person access to your account with your virutal card, that’s up to you. Monzo aren’t going to tell you that’s okay.

The point is I don’t want to have to penny pinch and add every transaction… But over the course of year, and being the one that does most of the purchased, that would me quite out of pocket.

Benefits to this feature is that both partners would have a view of transactions not just one

Then that’s a relationship issue, not a financial one.

Monzo are never going to give your partner access to your transactions in this way. You need a joint account for that.

Another possible solution to this use case would be to be able to set up a rule around certain transactions. For instance “when I pay with this virtual card, then add transaction to existing bill split”

Use a virtual card from a pot. Use the google sheets export to filter any transactions that come from that pot and total them. Then when your partner pays you back, make the reference #WHYDOWELIVELIKETHIS so you can filter those too. And then you can both see what is spent and what is paid back.

That solution is more admin not less.

My request is for a very real use case, considering people are already using workarounds and there are other business trying to solve this too.
What made me think of it was ongoing home/diy costs we are splitting but I am shopping for/ implementing. I think there could be a slicker soln
