Great little incentive, love it!

Also love the idea of what @Carlo1460 suggested here:

Good idea.. bad execution.

The rate of payout for this is atrocious at just 1000 a month so id much rather a more upfront way of communicating this.

To save it, it would be good for a summary each month to say how many bills were paid (and included in the draw).

Rather than just saying oh we did 1000 it would be good to say we had 200,000 bills paid this month and reimbursed £x via 1000 bills to x people. Transparency for loyalty rather than a marketing gimic

Feel like people expect too much for a possibility of a bill being paid back, when they’re paying their subscription for the other perks attached.

While I quite like incentives like that, and it did make me think (even if only for a moment) of moving some bills to Monzo, the chance of having a bill paid, and more than that, the chance of having a bill of significant value paid back by Monzo is very small to be worth the ā€˜cost’ of moving all bills to Monzo.

Currently all of our bills are shared between Nationwide and Barclaycard (which we use as a joint credit card). Nationwide, because we want to keep using it as a main joint account, it forces us to pay money into it each month and always qualify for the Fairer Share incentive (plus we like them as an institution and want to continue supporting them).

I would not risk losing our Fairer Share status (which has been pretty solid over the past 2-3 years), for a 1 in 1000 chance Monzo might pay us back our £10 Tidal sub for a month.

Saw the notification for this in app yesterday, I literally misread it as ā€œsay hello to Balls*ckā€ - took a double take…

Be super curious to understand how many eligible transactions there are across the pool of subscribers for the feature. May the odds be ever in my favour!

I think youre agreeing with me?

I dont think this will get people to subscribe unless they already where considering it but i dont like the way its marketed as its a bit misleading with how low the chances are of you ever getting a bill paid back and i think monzo should be a bit more upfront on that.

Can someone breakdown the chances of my bills being paid back in a different way, as i dont understand it.

Yhe terms say chances are ā€˜1100 divided by number of bills paid’.

Im not sure what this means to me.

I i have 10 bills, 1100Ć·10 = 110. This doesnt seem right.

Facts are:
Monzo have 1 million+ people on paid plans (according to their 2025 annual report)
Monzo will pay at least 1000 eligible bills a month
The odds are equal to 1,100/the number of bills in the previous month

If you assume at this point that every one of those million paying customers has at least 2 bills a month that are eligible then that’s 1,100/2,000,000 which is a 0.055% chance (around 1800/1). If you say it’s 4 bills then it’s 0.028% (around 3500/1) and so on.

Right, but for those people already on paid plans - I.e. they already see benefit of paying for a plan, it’s just free money for them - which is a good thing.

And maybe it helps drive a few extra people to consider upgrading, regardless of the low chance.

Whether they’re fully transparent about how it works or not, the odds are still the same.

It’s free money, something they don’t have to do. If you win, great, if you don’t it’s no loss.

I’ve already posted my thoughts on this earlier in the thread so I won’t repeat myself but the info and examples I posted were in direct response to the post above mine where they asked for help working out the chances. Obviously at this point none of us know what the size of the ā€œbills in the previous monthā€ number will be so it’s just guesswork but that has me wondering…. Do Monzo need to publicly declare the odds? Does this count as a lottery?

I feel like this is what people are forgetting.

National lottery odds are lower, jackpot for lotto is 1 in 45 million, euro is 1 in 139 million.

People still play the lottery and never win

This was my first thought, that they should need to publish the odds somewhere?

As much as this is a type of gimmick quirky thing that Monzo would do, I do think Monzo is missing a trick with just competing with other banks where they give cashback on some bills ā€œto everyoneā€ not just ā€œsee if your the random lucky one to get money paid backā€. As much as Monzo do come up with funky ideas and have had some brilliant products, I do think things like these ā€œlucky hat pullsā€ are what make people not fully switch to Monzo as it’s not really taking things seriously and comes across as a gimmick . Offer bigger better deals to ALL customers - even if it’s just 1% on all Bills it’s better than nothing. Upgrading and paying for the upgrade doesn’t sway me on the hope I may be picked for a bill to be paid that month. ā€œIt’s a no from me - I’m outā€ lol

If all banks were the same what would be the point of competition?

People need to ditch this mentality of everything needs to be the same, or just talk with your feet and move to that which you need so much.
