How does the app decide who to automatically include in my “Pay Contacts” section?
Specifically, will everyone in my contacts who are also using Monzo show up regardless of whether I’m in their contacts list or do I also need to be in their contacts for them to show up in my “Pay Contacts”?
You don’t have to be in their contacts list. They simply need to enable “Payments with friends” in their settings and they become discoverable by anyone who’s got them in their contacts.
Just checked and I now have 51 friends/family using Monzo
The other day 6 of us went to the cinema and one person went to get all the drinks and popcorn and paid. We used Bill Splitting and everyone had contributed their share within seconds!
These kind of network effects, where features get better and more useful by virtue of how many friends you have using the service, are something I think we can really double down on over the next year
Purely my own opinion (seems to be needed for every comment these days ), but I worry that features which take advantage of the “network” effect, only really affect a small minority of people (but within Monzo HQ, it might seem really good).
Personally, I can’t see myself ever using them - In part due to my social circles (despite nearly all of my family having a Monzo account), but also I don’t think they are aimed at my situation.
There are so many other things I’d personally like to see, before more features came about which relied on users having other contacts using Monzo.
For the record, I think the integration and “network effect” of Monzo accounts is very good, and certainly something that can take the hassle out of situations in future.
But I’d hazard a guess there are significantly more people who don’t use these features than those who do (purely down to their friends choice of banks).
I’ve 6 contacts but unfortunately none of them use Monzo as main account so things like transferring money, bill splitting or tabs, whilst great, I don’t use.
