I have seen the option to request virtual card for Paypal credit but they fail to verify me even with the SMA code they sent.
So does this mean, if you use the PayPal debit card in store and spend less than £10 you don’t earn any PayPal points?
Edit: you do earn points, found in Q&A. You even earn partial points. The only catch is when shopping online, you must have enough in the PayPal balance when paying with the card to earn at the highest rate
Surely this is better than Amex then. Where the earn rate is effectively 0.45%-0.5% (assuming cash and cash equivalent rewards). This appears to pay out 1% cash back if using their card. The only issue is they could obviously change this at any time.
Yeah - looks like it. Normally you get 1 point for every £10 spent using PayPal credit and the opening offer to encourage debit card take up is a 10x bonus.
I’ve just ‘tested’ the debit card in McDonalds (and it worked fine) but that was just over £10 spent.
To provide clear testing and answers though, I’ll pop into a newsagent in a bit and buy a bar of chocolate just to see what happens. It’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make to provide answers for you…
So it has to come from the PayPal balance, and won’t fund it from the primary funding source?
That would make sense I guess otherwise it’d just be a proxy for another card like Curve almost.
It’ll first try to take from PayPal balance and then a backup which you can choose and change. However for online shopping it must come from the PayPal balance only to get the maximum rewards.
The only unfortunate thing is you can’t choose a credit card as the back up. Otherwise you’d be effectively getting 1.5% cash back!
Just bought a Sainsbury’s giftcard via Bluelight card and it looks like I would be earning rewards too.
Lloyds debit set as back up card for the Paypal debit card.
It looks like payments at petro stations are excluded from rewards. I have several BP purchases with no points
I wonder if you connect it to curve would it override somehow as they have a habit of changing the MCC.
I will try next time I do a fill up.
You got a credit card as well? Presumably that’s attached to the Paypal Credit account?
I was only offered the Debit card - even though I do have a Paypal Credit Account.
I tried to get the Credit card and it offered me a Virtual Card in the app, clicking on this to apply says ‘We Can’t Verify it’s You’
Had that but in about two hours it said I am already verified and I ordered the physical one.
Use the app, I could not see the option to get it in the browser.
Yeah. I’ve had the credit account for many years so was offered to order both in the app — to be fair, they sent me an email, otherwise I wouldn’t have known about these cards.
Oh well - looks like Paypal wont give me a card to go with my credit account. I’ve had the account for a very long time (I think I got it originally to by a 2nd Gen iPad Pro from Apple) but there’s no credit card option in the app and if I search online and find a link on their website to apply, it takes me back to the app and says I’m not eligible.
I’ve got the Debit card - but not really started using that yet because I made the mistake of deciding to fund my Paypal balance through a bank transfer instead of by a card payment thinking it would be Open Banking/instant transfer and didn’t realise it was by a direct debit transfer. So, still waiting for the money to actually reach Paypal. Apparently the ‘estimated arrival’ is the 6th Dec.
Nothing beats a good ole drama.
Debit card (realise this is the credit card thread, but wasn’t sure where else it would be best paced) arrived, doesn’t feel the most discreet label, given most banks I’ve recently received a card from try and hide the ‘feel’ of a new card when it’s posted. Guess this can’t be helped with intentional deliveries.
Card activated ok and spending seems to work fine, by pulling funds from a current account.
