New PayPal fee for inactive accounts

Absolutely loads of people use it for online shopping, I use it if it’s an option. I don’t have to give the merchant my card details for example which is handy.

It’s used all over the UK by plenty different people and nope not just for eBay payments.

I don’t have to mess around inputting my card details onto a website, click PayPal it auto logins and then I’ve got the option to either pay with PayPal credit and pay the amount over the next few months, pay after delivery so get the item and PayPal pay the retailer there and then, or pay with my stored card details.

There must be a reason why they’ve done this. Do we reckon this has something to do with interest rates potentially going negative and PayPal looking to discourage users who don’t make them money by making payments on a regular basis from holding balances in their accounts like it’s a savings account?

It will be something that has spooked them into doing this for sure. There must be hundreds of thousands or dormant of accounts with various small amounts in them, which PayPal are holding and would therefore potentially be liable for negative interest. Might as well cover your losses with them.

They are charging people if the person you sell to creates a dispute too.

Ebay are currently rolling out their own in-house payment system, so I imagine Paypal will be taking a massive hit from the loss of ebay customers in the near future

The contract for Ebay use of PayPal as ‘first choice’ ends in 2023 and “has not been extended and it will not be extended”. As mentioned by @welshguy99, eBay UK will have eBay’s new method (as an alternative choice to PayPal) later this year/early next year.

So I agree, it feels like PayPal are preparing for the drop in revenue.

I’d never give my card number to a small merchant at checkout because of too many data breaches you never hear of. PayPal can spend millions on security and touch wood 20yrs of online shopping I’ve never had fraud. The fee makes sense to get rid of dormant accounts which will cost to administer I guess.

I’ve noticed on my amex it now says just EBAY and not PAYPAL followed by the sellers name. (I don’t have a paypal account)

Guessing ayden charge less to just process a card than paypal does. (I thought ebay would have a direct relationship with amex like most retailers do)

eBay & PayPal split some years ago but are still friends with benefits

You’re brave not having a PayPal account, I’d never give my card number directly to a small merchant & would rather let PayPal pass on the money.

I use a credit card for anything online just for its protection. It’s not my money being stolen if there was a data leak so I would not be liable.

Smart move, so do I!

My attitude is that, even if not using Section 75, I would have time to get fraudulent charges sorted out and refunded before having to pay off my statement - so I wouldn’t be out of pocket.
