Monzo Mobile! šŸ“±

And you can use all your allowance abroad. The 30gb cap is broken and has been for a very long time.

Something like Quality of Service (QoS)?

They use QCI which is QoS Class Indicator.

Key Parameters Defined by QCI

  • Priority Level: Decides which data packets move first when the network is busy.
  • Packet Delay Budget (PDB): Sets the maximum allowed time for a packet to travel.
  • Packet Error Loss Rate (PELR): Defines the acceptable rate of lost or corrupted packets.
  • Resource Type: Distinguishes between GBR (Guaranteed Bit Rate) and Non-GBR (Best-effort) traffic.

A higher QCI number is worse in terms of priority and performance.

In telecom, QCI operates like a golf score: lower numbers get the best treatment, while higher numbers get pushed to the back of the line.

I don’t have an Android device with network signal guru on to fetch the number.

Didn’t know this. Even happier on iD mobile now then.

Broken and they’re disguising it as a promotion?

Somewhere on ISP it was talked about, I’m sure it was broken for ages and then they put that status up.

VOXI had a ducked data thing for a while? Even my data was broken for a month or two. Where it just wouldn’t go down.

I fully support any broken system that benefits the customer

They did have but I think they managed to patch most of them.

Has anyone actually checked the QCI of the Monzo sims compared to other MVNOs instead of speculation, there’s only so many QCI numbers, I doubt 1global is lower priority than iot sims roaming on O2 which gets more than kbps, the issue is more likely a bottleneck at the point where O2 hands off the data to 1global or at 1globals breakout to the internet.

Purely a guess but I doubt 1global has a worse QCI than giffgaff. I’ll try to get round to checking the giffgaff QCI tomorrow, I can also check O2 PAYG. Do they have Tesco mobile PAYG sims available in Tesco ?

Most of the peerings will likely be private interconnects with the big CDNs (assuming they exist), so number of peers doesn’t mean too much, upstreams in the UK seem to be mainly GTT and Cogent, not bad.

I also stick with MVNOs that offer pure connectivity as otherwise you just have an extra point of failure, also if there’s a weird connection issue with a site and a major UK network network it’s more likely to get identified and fixed than with an MVNO that uses their own transit. But won’t make a difference for vast majority of users.

They do at the checkouts across the conveyor usually.

Are you frightened of GovWIFI?

No, but they probably have a good look what folk are doing on it.

I’ve used it for years and not concerned at all and aside from it blocking access to some sites nothing a VPN can’t sort

It doesn’t like Nord Lynx but Nord Whisper works fine  maybe it was having an off day.

You lot have given me some useful and interesting insights into how MVNO’s function from a technical perspective which is great, thanks for this. I have been having the same issues with zero data throughput and LTE only at home. It is strange as I have another line with O2 directly which is passing data via 4G. Granted it’s slow and nowhere near EE but it does work.

Added a smarty (Three) and voxi (Vodafone) referral to the wiki if anyone’s looking to change :grimacing:
