The details from this topic have now been merged into this one, to keep all of the details about these issues in one place -
this topic is no longer an open Wiki.
I’ve created this Wiki, which anyone can edit, following a suggestion from @Frankiejr @Chapuys so that users can list the UK merchants who don’t accept Monzo’s debit card.
If you’re trying to use the card and seeing an ‘invalid sort code’ or it’s being identified as a prepaid / credit card, then the issue has been caused by the merchant not recognising the new sort code or BIN. In which case, add the merchant to one of the lists in this Wiki. If you’re having any other issues, & they’re not listed but not struck out in this post, please record them here.
Add the merchant / bank’s name, in alphabetical order, under each of the headers below, including details such as whether you were trying to use the phone in person / online / by phone etc. & any error messages or the explanation you were given for the issue.
If you do manage to make a card payment with a merchant on this list then strike out their name (by surrounding it with ~~ i.e. ~~name~~
) rather than deleting it, to let everyone else know that they’re ready to go. Struck out merchants will be removed after 6 months.
The sooner we can get these merchants & banks to fix any issues, the better of course so do hassle anyone on this list to get this sorted ASAP
While the current account is available to preview, this Wiki is split into different sections for each generation of the debit card. A description of each generation of card’s distinguishing features is written in italics under each section’s header.
2nd Generation
These cards have the new Mastercard logo. They’ll also either have your name or the words Monzo Bank printed on the bottom left of the card.
- EE phone network
- Odeon Cinemas - The in-app booking and collection service does not recognise the debit card (2nd gen). There was no manned box office at my local cinema but the kiosk also didn’t recognise the card when paying for popcorn. They stated that it was an “unknown error”.
- Paddy Power
- Pay at Pump petrol pumps
- Premium Credit - Both the website and over the phone they say that the debit card is an invalid debit card
Sky Bet- Stan James
- Tesco Bank
- The National Lottery
1st Generation
These cards have ‘debit’ at the end of the card number & do not say ‘beta’ underneath Monzo on the front of the card.
Virgin Money - Cannot make manual payments against credit card either online or via the phone (their system doesn’t seem to recognise Mastercard debit cards). Does not affect moving direct debit across.
