Context: I currently have a contents-only home insurance policy with Monzo, and buildings insurance with another insurer; I took out the buildings policy to coincide with the completion of my home purchase last year, but it would take us a while to decorate and move in so we didn’t need contents insurance until later. Now that my buildings cover is up for renewal, I want to change my Monzo policy to include buildings and contents.
Problem: I can get a quote for a new policy starting when my old buildings policy ends, but I can’t actually take it out until I cancel my contents policy as the app tells me I can only have one policy for a specific address on my account at a time. If I cancel the contents policy (in order to schedule the buildings and contents policy to start in 30 days), my contents cover stops immediately, leaving me uninsured for about 30 days. This is what the chatbot recommended I do (which is not very good advice).
Now, my only option is to cancel my contents policy in 30 days, and at the time same time taking out a buildings and contents policy in order to minimise the window in which I’d be uninsured for contents.
Suggestion: The home insurance flow should see that I’m trying to take out a buildings and contents policy at a future date for an address where I already have a contents policy, and offer to convert this existing policy to a building and contents policy at the specified date. I know that in the background this would probably just schedule my contents policy to end at that time and start the building and contents policy at the same time, but this would minimise the uninsured period and save me from having to do this manually in a month, giving me peace of mind that my policy will transition smoothly from my old insurer.
