I mean the slightly fancier brand I got last time is definitely more absorbent / is less likely to fall apart when mopping up a spill, but at the end of the day it’s a piece of paper I stick into puddles of liquid to make them disappear so it doesn’t seem to make a huge difference.
Lidl’s own make does the job. WRT toilet paper Costco’s Kirkland is excellent and it’s their biggest seller in the UK. People buy it by the truckload
This thread is immeasurably interesting. Thanks to everyone contributing. Look forward to being able buy some more Ora!
So it’s been a few months since there was any activity in this thread, and in that time, I’ve tried most of the recommendations on here.
Plenty’s Handy towel has been very difficult to get a hold of for the last several months. I wasn’t keen on it compared to ora initially, and it still feels like a downgrade, but that was before I went messing with other brands, which is the opportunity their scarcity afforded me to do.
Plenty’s Handy Towels are the next best thing to Ora, and I very much missed it every bit as I do Ora whilst trying out others.
Rolls are too big an unwieldily to use at all one handed without some kind of holder, and even then. And I find the sheets particularly cumbersome. Of the roles Plenty’s original one was the best I used. Similar in performance to their handy towels, but bigger and on a roll. However, like because the perforations, they shedded a bit of lint, which doesn’t happen with the handy towels.
The worse kitchen Towel brand I tried was Regina. I tried the XXL recommended on here, and the one they’re famous for: Regina Blitz. The XXL had the edge for me, because there was no dye. Both of these had very large (which could be argued as a negative) thick sheets, and that’s about where the positives end. They’re observant yes, very, but in the process develop a nasty holier than thou (they disintegrate and develop holes) attitude. They shed and lint like they’re in a tumble dryer, and with the Blitz, the blue dye runs and stains my white ceramics, countertop, and my apparently not so stainless, stainless steel! I also found the roles so big that it was difficult to even tear a sheet off using both hands.
So Amazon have Plenty’s handy towel back in stock. I’ve stockpiled it of course, just in case. 72 packs. That should last me a year or so. Hopefully by then, Ora will be back.
72 packs
We’re still using Spar’s own-brand towels which are fit for purpose. Cheapish and now with 9%+2% cashback via Monzo = a smile with every wipe.
Not one I’ve tried! Don’t think we have one on the island. Tried Tesco’s and Co-op’s own brand stuff though. They were okay. I was specifically trying to source the variants made by the company who are behind Ora, but didn’t have much luck.
I’m going to try out the Plenty tubeless ones…
I recently switched over to the tubeless Cushelle toilet rolls and feel like they help cut down on waste. The bigger rolls are also a plus in my opinion. So hoping the kitchen towels are similarly good.
I’ve had no problems getting my Costco Kitchen roll. Huge & super absorbent, both on Amazon & In store.
You need to build a fort.
Lidl’s Simply 2 Jumbo Rolls. For the price it does the job. No one used kitchen towels years ago. Same comment for Post It Notes.
Lidl doesn’t exist so can’t try theirs.
Options consist of Co op, Tesco or anything online that won’t try to extort me on delivery.
I’ve got plenty Plenty to keep me going through 2024. So hopefully come 2025 the industry supply problems are a thing of the past.
I don’t want Revels turning up to post links back to you hating on Regina but we swear by Regina Blitz. Hands down.
Don’t worry, you’re not alone. People rave about that one. It’s the most consistently reviewed too.
Both times in my life that I’ve tried it, I’ve hated it. I just don’t see the hype beyond ginormous thick sheets. But that blue dye runs! The paper shreds lint and tears holes.
The plenty I’m using now is far smaller in size (but I prefer that), much thinner (I don’t prefer that), but just as absorbent. Most importantly, there’s no dye, they don’t shed, and they don’t get all holy when I’m cleaning. It’s the last two factors that I think really matter to me above all else.
I’d prefer thicker too if it didn’t mean sacrificing those aspects, if only for the fact I hate the feeling once they’ve soaked up the surface cleaner. But having since just ditched all my cleaning supplies in favour of hypochlorous acid solutions, that’s not much of a problem anymore.
Yeah bigger sheets aren’t necessarily a winner. I could use half a sheet.
My brother visited the other day and washed his hands after patting the dogs. He dried them with a clump of kitchen roll. He’s not allowed back.
A clump is like four or five sheets in case anyone is wondering. Unforgivable.
GAH the plenty hand towels seem to have been discontinued. I am currently feeling peeved about it as they are so handy to keep around.
For real?!
Extra glad I stocked up then now. They’re the best replacement for Ora I’d found.
What will you be using instead?
For real! I can’t find them anywhere and they aren’t on the Plenty website anymore!
I have no idea, everything else seems to be in rolls.
If Ora (or these) don’t come back I’m just gonna have to suck it up and accept the rolls.
Any idea which Plenty roll is most similar to the handy towels?
The regular “kitchen roll” is very similar. The ones that don’t have loads of extra claims plastered on the packaging. (I buy the rolls for dog related spills and the hand towels to keep on my desk).
I am currently researching z-fold towels like this:
And desktop dispensers (not this particular one though as the size seems wrong)
I doubt you’d make a good replacement
