Joint account Pots - dual auth for spends or transfers

It would be a great feature for things like big joint purchases. When a transfer out of the pot or a purchase from that pot with a virtual card that both account holders have a prompt to accept the payment or transfer.

If you don’t trust the other person why do you have a joint account?

Was it your intention to suggest the worst idea of the year?

Such a welcoming and friendly bunch here I see. It’s not about trust, it’s about security.

It’s not your money to co-sign. They are free to spend every penny and so are you.

If you don’t want them spending, don’t have the account or don’t put lots of money in it.

Feels more like an avenue to enable financial abuse. I’d be firmly against this feature I’m afraid.

If you’re insecure for any reason, why do you have a joint account with them?

The money belongs to both of you by law. If you spend it all, good for you, if they spend it all, good for them.

The alternative is to keep your money separate if you don’t trust them enough to not spend it.

Wow :joy: post a feature suggestion and get accused of financial abuse!

We have a joint account where we keep a lot of our joint savings. We have had cards cloned before when we banked with another bank and aren’t keen on the idea of it happening again.

The suggestion is the same as having MFA on your email account etc.

You’re asking for better fraud systems, but if it is fraud, you’re covered by the bank anyway.

Do you both have to authorise your emails too?

Sounds more like relationship advice is needed, not pathways to block the joint account holder spending their money.

I think people’s point though is that there’s no real difference in having this issue on a joint account or a personal account, as in you could just as easily have a personal account card cloned, so only suggesting it for joint accounts makes it sound like an odd request. Genuine fraud would already be reimbursed so would be an inconvenience but not much more.

My thought process was there are two cards for the same account so it’s double the chance so to speak. I get we are covered still but it’s an extra layer of protection to stop it happening in the first place.

I trust my cats.

You offered a suggestion, I countered your suggestion with facts and now you’re on the defensive.

It is you, asking ridiculous things on the internet as a blank profile and insecure relationship status trailing behind.

But we don’t point fingers x

I see where you’re coming from with this, particularly if you have a large sum of money in the savings pots.

“Two-to-sign” accounts do exist already and they aren’t a new thing by any means. The issue with challenger banks is the processes and not having branches. It’s do-able though! If you have substantial sums, I’d look at NatWest or RBS.

Monzo offer something along these lines already, but not quite what you’re looking for:

You could also see the “Allowances” section for the pots and require added security for anything above your pre-defined limit:

Your request looks to be an extension of this (particularly for payments) and this falls under the allowances and security controls in the Monzo app. It’s not exactly what you propose, but does provide a similar workaround.

Curious, do these exist for personal / joint accounts? I’m well aware they exist for business accounts, but I’m not sure I’ve seen this offered for non-business/organisation account types.

They do, but by separate mandate and I don’t think you can do online banking with them. It’s in-branch. A family member has had one for years and it’s rarely used as a joint savings (I think!) so not much inconvenience. They did withdraw to buy a motor home type thing and was just a morning appointment.

I think it would be technically possible? So not a bad idea. Particularly with advances in tech over the years I’m surprised it hasn’t already featured. Particular for large transfers. Payments might be a bit of a faff.

Thank you for your suggestion @Launcelot This is almost the exact same scenario (even down to the motorhome). I’ll have a look into these options later.
