Japan running out of credit card numbers

It’s mostly the 6 range that was mostly used by Switch and Laser.
While RuPay and Maestro use some of them it would be a solution for them to be used by MC or another scheme.

1 is actually being used by UATP, an travel-only (and predominantly airline) charge/credit card network. Cards are usually only issued to businesses, and are issued directly by airlines, and thus aren’t exactly something one would bump into on a day to day basis. Given how few UATP cards there are out there, though, they might end up being open to sharing if Visa asks, much like how JCB and AmEx share 3 or Discover and UnionPay share 6.
