Introducing the new Monzo Plus

If you put a virtual card on your Amazon, say, and your Amazon account gets compromised, you don’t have to change the card numbers etc. on all your other accounts and places where you use cards.

You basically can have a virtual card number for every service, and isolate yourself should one get compromised.

Just in case anyone wanted a visual comparison

Can a virtual be used over the phone?

For me it would have to be the ability to cancel a virtual card without impacting anything else using real or other virtual numbers. I don’t think I could argue it as a security feature specifically, but it’s as close as I can get.

Edit: Unless you do the Create -> Spend -> Delete sequence in which case the account is untouchable because the card is single use only. That would certainly add security.

To me the view is virtual cards for everything you don’t need a physical card to use like over phone and online and a physical card in the shops and businesses where you need to have a machine to use

The features are kind of underwhelming, feels more like a patreon/gofundme rather than a completed premium bank account

You don’t work here anymore

Couple of suggestions based on playing around for a few hours.

When adding a split category, I’m often wanting a 50/50 split. Which for most amounts isn’t possible without working it out in your head and typing it manually. Few different suggestions to solve.

  • Start at a 50/50 split and edit from there.
  • Make sure it always breaks at exactly 50% when using the plus/minus buttons.
  • Full percentage controls
  • Some buttons for common splits.

Should be able to rename and move/hide other bank accounts like pots.

Looks like this includes Regular Savers too. I cant add mine from First Direct. Do you think this may change in the future?

See you again in 30 minutes

Big bug where’s the name of the account it should be nationwide it’s blank it disappears

Freezing your physical card doesn’t affect virtual cards.

You can’t freeze virtual cards, you can only delete them and make another. This is just the first version and we’re keen to see how people use them!

That’s fair, and makes sense. Was more of an “out of curiosity” than a “gimme freezing on virtual cards pls” :+1:

I’ve seen virtual cards that work on use once principal where details change every time you use it and that works when you don’t need to save it for later and there’s times when that’s good but it want work with amazon cause they can multi charge for an order

I thought we already established that I’m a bot :robot:

The Monzo Plus commands were pre-scheduled in months ago to trigger on launch :joy:

I’ve signed up and really happy with custom categories and transaction splits (that’s what’s sold it to me as I am a little OCD with budgeting).

Something I’m really hoping for is attaching a virtual card to a pot - for example I’ve a “gift” pot that I withdraw from. I mainly get things online, so a virtual card that spends from this pot would remove the need for me to manually transfer the item price into my main account.

Great to hear about the export feature… Aside that it only works with exporting to Google sheets. No chance of export to CSV or similar?

E: ops it’s already implemented

Regular Monzo used to have a “group by merchant” feature in the spending summary. E.g. total sum of all Sainsbury’s spending for the given month.

  1. Why did that go/is it coming back?
  2. Will this be possible in the new Monzo Plus?

You can already export to CSV in-app

It’s still there. Click on a transaction from a merchant and scroll down and click on the line that says number of transactions.
