A good few weeks.
Took about 5 days for me when I applied to get the email to say my account was opened
Remember that there have only been 5 working days since the 30th March so they’ll be a little behind at the moment. My account was opened the following day when I applied (for Premier) but it was around 2 weeks before everything was fully usable (i.e. online banking, HSBC app, etc.).
I’d imagine it’ll be early next week given the Easter Break.
HSBC don’t do fast. Even when I rejoined as a totally new customer it was not, as suggested via the app, quick and I definitely could not use the account within minutes ![]()
Are you still hsbc?
Yes ![]()
I honestly don’t really know why I bothered closing it the first time. It fits my needs perfectly currently. Plus, unlike Lloyds the card never randomly declines.
Not sure if they still do but they used to send tons of paperwork in the post as well
Not had that with HSBC but certainly did with FD. Thick slab of A4 every time I added the debit card to Apple Pay.
Yeah HSBC do this if it’s a new account but no where near the level of FD. I think about 2-3 letters for HSBC vs the Amazon for when I last opened one of those.
The main issue I had was to setup the account you needed a telephone banking pin which is great except when you live in the valleys, so miles away from the post office meaning it took an age to arrive.
I had to quite literally drive over the hill to the nearest town that still has branch and get them to write down my s/c and account number on a bit of paper for me.
Noticed that HSBC have an offer of up to £500 if you transfer your ISA(s) to them. My investments have done well this past 12 months so I’ve decided to kill two birds with one stone by transferring my ISA to them to get the maximum payout and re-qualify for Premier (even though they still haven’t threatened me with a downgrade to Advance yet).
Just rang up HSBC to check for the status on this one. They advised that a sort code and account number has been generated but my application is pending a card guard verification - does anyone know what this is?
Does the HSBC World Elite card support Mastercard Travel and Lifestyle services?
Interesting. I always thought that’d be one of the last to go,
I guess it sort of is?
Getting rid of the heaviest burden makes sense, then work it out from there. Retail banking may look good on the balance sheet if you ditch the bad debt.
Shame for Aussies abroad. The one time I needed customer support with my HSBC AU account, I was able to get it done in an HSBC UK branch.
They entirely exited Canada in 2024 which was their 5th largest market. They have been closing retail banks left right and centre, Australia was a matter of time, they already left New Zealand and mostly left the US.
I have a HSBC AU account and wonder what will happen to it when they get sold since I am a non-resident account holder and other Australian banks don’t usually allow non-residents or at least don’t usually post cards overseas. The new Australian bank will likely close my account after some time which is what happened to HSBC Canada users who were migrated to Royal Bank of Canada.
Yes, I’m aware this has been the case in other markets, I just figured the APAC market was the focus vs China specific which looks to be the case, alongside the UK*
*Yes, I understand what HSBC stands for ![]()

Their main markets are UK and HK/China. Their slogan used to be “the world’s local bank” but they have since withdrawn from that idea and have slowly been returning to their core DNA as the Hong Kong Shanghai banking corporation.
