Doesn’t seem very good to me. The Halifax/Lloyds world elite card has similar travel features at £180/year and the cash back rate works out that you’d always be ahead assuming you redeem for cashback/vouchers. HSBC is a little more flexible that you can transfer to airline points though.
Also, all of these cards are marketed toward travellers and yet they have foreign spend fees.
Wake me up when HSBC can list pending transactions for credit cards.
I think it’s just referring to the fact you still get the travel insurance as part of the package. As far as I know the WE card doesn’t have additional benefits in this area.
On balance, I’ll probably stick with WE for another year. Mostly because I’m due another 40,000 bonus points as part of the original sign up offer. These are only due upon renewal (at these new rates)…
So made a quick visit to the San Francisco branch of HSBC USA.
Very friendly staff. I said I wanted to apply for their credit card. Filled the forms, gave my documents and I got told I will hear back by mail if I get accepted.
Got asked why I wanted a US based credit card. I just said I bank in USD and HSBC UK doesn’t offer any USD credit cards.
All done in less than 15 minutes on my way to one of the tourist sights. No much hope to get accepted but hey, it was interesting to visit.
Yeah. They confirmed the mailing address and that’s it. I didn’t get a reference number though so not sure how to follow the progress of the application.
HSBC are quite strange about what can be done in app v not. For example, you can’t delete payees in the app (which is slightly frustrating) but you can amend SO/pay the CC off etc.
Personally, I’m happy with the level of CC functionality, would be nice if you could pay it off immediately though.
Thought I’d post here too but HSBC have increased the threshold for Premier accounts to £100K income (no need for investment account or mortgage). If holding just savings or investments, it’s also gone up to £100K.
Just in case anyone else was about 30 seconds away from having a total meltdown at their desk
“If you opened a Premier Account, or submitted your application for a Premier Account, on or before 4 September 2024, the previous eligibility criteria will still apply”
It would be a shame if that also changed, since the free travel insurance is the core reason I keep this account, it’s significantly better than the paid offerings with Monzo and even Nationwide.
