I couldn’t do my job on a laptop, power and screen size would be a huge hinderance lol.
No way I could work from bed and working from a laptop would be a challenge.
In bed I’d have to remember to put clothes on otherwise I’d be in a meeting nekkie ain’t no body want to see that monstrosity . Laptop I’d be missing the screen real-estate I need if I’m analysing stuff.
Also being a bench scientist and having a lot of cell work to do means its never gonna be practical to be a WFHer either really…
I rarely use the laptop - except when travelling or catching up on messages/emails in the mornings - I do most my work on my 49" ultrawide monitor
I have 2x 27" 4K monitors but the power is more an issue when doing CAD work.
I worked from home for a few years, starting before the pandemic, for health reasons. My line manager always commented on how much more productive I was. Mind you, the final few months before I retired I did bugger all other than replying to the occasional email, and nobody bothered chasing me up on it.
Had a bad headache so called in sick today. Tbh I probably could have worked I also just sort of felt like a day off.
It’s my first sick day in about 18 months and I’m actually enjoying it - daytime TV has not improved but feels like more of a luxury when it’s stolen time. Ordered a McDonald’s for lunch and now it’s a tipping point highlight show.
Do you get full pay from day 1 with your employer?
Our place doesn’t pay anything for the first 3 days and then full pay kicks in from day 4. From day 4 onwards it’s full pay for up to 12 weeks and half-pay for a further 12 weeks.
I’d guess most sickness absence is a day or two at most. It’s quite an annoying policy from an employee perspective.

I’ll be back at work tomorrow but if I worked at your place I might be sure to be sick until at least next Friday
Nice! That’s exactly the issue - when we are sick, we stay off for a lot longer than we need to because we’d rather not risk going back too soon and potentially going sick again and losing another 3 days pay, as it would be classed as a new absence.
I’ve currently got 1 foot out of the door, so hopefully my next employer will have a better policy.

You’re not entitled to anything more than statutory. Paying in full on day 4 isn’t a legal requirement.

I believe so. They are a large multi-national with an in-house legal team, so I’m sure they will be compliant with whatever the laws say.
As far as I’m aware, there is no right to any sick pay beyond statutory which is almost nothing.
Which doesn’t kick in to day 4 anyway.
Pretty common to only have statutory in the UK, I’ve worked a few places with no sick pay other than statutory.
I do strongly prefer to work for somewhere with a good policy though, if I get properly sick I still have a mortgage to pay.
Wouldn’t bank on that. It turned out that we were paying a group of staff less than minimum wage which was only discovered by accident, and our payroll people definitely should have known what they were doing.
And all it does is encourage people to go to work sick and infect others. Or if WFH, probably not doing much and instead of recovering spending the day sat at a desk.
Seeing these comments make me feel very fortunate to get 6 months full pay and then 6 months half pay!!
If you are where I think you are, there’s another 12 months to be had after that at the pension rate of pay.
Pretty sure that’s not in my contract but hopefully I never have to find out
